Breakdown

Norma Desmond: A beautiful but eccentric faded star of the silent screen era. Once the biggest name in Hlollywood, she is a recluse in her decaying mansion. A woman of great pride and passion with hopes of a comeback. Must be able to negotiate
difficult rhythms and melodies and have huge vocal chops as the show is almost sung-through. 50-60.

Seeking star names. All ethnicities.

Joe Gillis: A handsome but just past his prime screenwriter whose career is in decline. His playboy looks and manners used to
open every door but things have changed. He moves in with Norma Desmond all the while falling in love with young Betty Schaefer. An absoulte charmer with a dark side. Strong legit/pop voice to an A. 40ish. All ethnicities.

Max Von Mayerling, Norma’s devoted butler: He protects her from the outside world. A dark and ominous presence in the mansion. We later learn he was Norma’s director and first husband. Dramatic baritone. 55-65. All ethnicities.

Betty Schaefer: A beautiful young aspiring writer with spunk. She and Joe team up on a script and fall in love. Ultimately Joe breaks her heart. Legit/pop soprano. 21 – 27. All ethnicities.

Cecil B. DeMille: The iconic Hollywood film director who discoverd Norma Desmond and made her a star. Baritone. 60’s. Historic figure.

Artie Green, Betty’s fiance: A self-described “Jewish Casanova”. A good-hearted guy. Baritenor. 25 – 30. All ethnicities.

Sheldrake: A crass studio exec/film producer. Baritone. 45-55. Also in the ensemble. All ethnicities.

Manfred, A Beverly Hills men’s clothier: Eager to please and a tad effite. Tenor. 35-50. Also in the ensemble. All
ethnicities.

Ensemble of 6 women and 7 men. All vocal ranges. All must be strong solo singers and versitile actors.

1 man and 2 women of the ensemble must additionally be movers.
