Seeking (all listed roles are available (i.e. not yet offered and accepted)):

Notes:

  • No housing is available to out-of-area performers.
  • Theatre states that this is the premier of a proposed annual co-production between City Equity Theatre and the Alabama School of Fine Arts (the state’s 7th–12th grade magnet arts school). Theatre is very interested in “professional actors who will model proper union behavior for this production in order to demonstrate to young students a focused, solid work ethic.”

Prof. Hart-Payne:

Man, 40s–60s. Authoritarian, intimidating schoolmaster; DOES NOT believe in “sparing the rod, and spoiling the child”. Seeking an actor capable of playing a slightly stylized character. Three scenes.

Herr Steiffel / Dr. Seltzer:

Male, 40s–60s. Steiffel: Angry, bitter, self-involved; mourning father of suicidal victim Moritz Steiffel. Seltzer:Unctuous, jaded professional doctor used to dealing with (and glossing over) illegitimate pregnancies in teenage girls. Two scenes.

Frau Bergmann:

Woman, 40s–60s. Mother of lead ingénue character Wendla Bergman. Loving, but extremely repressed; highly emotionally conflicted. Late 19th Century German wife (no accent). Cannot bring herself to tell her 14-year-old daughter the facts of life, to the extent that she insists on adhering to the concept of “The Stork” bringing babies into the world, not unlike Santa Claus. Three scenes.

Frau Gabor:

Woman, 40s–60s. Mother of lead character Melchior Gabor. Caring, slightly indulgent, progressive thinking mother for the late 19th Century. Very level-headed, with her heart in the right place. One who has tried to bring her son up in the repressive society of Kaiserreich Germany as a young man who can rise above the mores and oppressive manners of the time. Two scenes.
