BREAKDOWN

Alex is a fifteen year old Asian-American girl going to extremes to get her own mother to notice her. She’s a dream child-- except to her parents who wish she was a boy. Luckily she finds a sympathetic ear in Kate, her irreverent guidance counselor who knows all too well what it’s like to walk in Alex’s shoes. As three generations of women find their identity in question, each needs to decide who makes the rules and what happens when you break them.

SEEKING:

KATE WU
Female, late 30’s, Chinese-American.. Quick with an irreverent sense of humor which she uses to dodge uncomfortable situations. And as a high school guidance counselor, she is more often than not in uncomfortable situations.

ALEX CHAN
Female, 15, Chinese-American. Very smart, but shy and diffident until she feels it's safe to open up to you. Then once you're in there, she's actually pretty funny, incisive and insightful. She's going through some shit right now.

MILLIE CHAN
Female, early 40’s, Chinese-American. This is Alex's hard loving mom. She criticizes passive-aggressively, but it's clear that the things she says come from a tender place. She's torn between her desire to see her daughter achieve great things and her resentment at the fact that she never had the opportunity to do so herself.

RICHARD CHAN
Male, mid 40’s, Chinese-American. Alex's father. He's traditional, a business man, a proud provider. But he's hella awkward when it comes to emotions and depends on Millie to handle all that. He wants their next kid to be a boy real bad.

REGGIE WATTS
Male, late 30’s, African-American. A writer and a funny guy. He's been Kate's boyfriend for almost three years now, and has been laughing off a lot of racial stuff that whole time. But shit just got real and now he's questioning the legitimacy of their relationship.

RUSS MITCHELL
Male, 17, Caucasian. He likes Alex and wants to have a meaningful relationship with her. He's sensitive and so, so well-meaning, but quietly reinforces the patriarchy.
