Breakdown

SHATTER: A powerful examination of the largest man-made explosion before Hiroshima, Shatter follows a small family in 1917 Halifax, Canada and the aftermath of a tragedy that physically and emotionally tears their world apart. Strongly paralleling events surrounding 9/11, Shatter delves into what happens when a broken community searches for someone to blame.

NOTE: All actors double as the voices of the community of Halifax, Canada, 1917, where the play is set.

SEEKING:

ANNA MACLEAN
18+ to play 16-17 year old Caucasian female of Scottish descent. On the brink of womanhood, giddy with the prospects of her first crush. Falls in love and loses her senses - like all teenagers, regardless of time/place. Strong-willed, but easily swayed by her heart.

JENNIE MACLEAN
late 30s to early 40s Caucasian female of Scottish descent. Anna's mother. A devoted single mother, to the point of over-protective. Socially repressed, following the disaster that blinds her, she goes from open-hearted and functional to withdrawn, isolated, and paranoid with flashes of violence.

ELSIE SCHULTZ
Mid to late 50s Caucasian female. A widow, Elsie is devoted to the memory of her husband and seeks great solace there.
Full of life, she is incredibly capable and loyal. A devoted friend and a true survivor. A facility for German encouraged (played with a noticeable German accent, as well as some spoken German text).

BRIAN DAVIDSON
18+ to play 18-20 year old Caucasian male of Scottish descent. A recent recruit to the military. Still finding his way in to manhood. A loyal soldier, doing what the job entails. Although he wants to take care of Anna as he becomes devoted to her, his job is his top priority.
