This is a remounting of the production that was most recently seen at the Public Theater's Under
the Radar Festival by theatre company, New Saloon. In it, an ensemble of actors performs six
different English translations of the original Russian text of Anton Chekhov's Uncle Vanya
(from the baroque 1907 edition, to minimalist contemporary adaptations, to a gobbledygook
Google Translate) simultaneously and will play various roles throughout. Actors will also be
singing complicated choral acapella music and should be strong singers in addition to having
strong facility for complicated language.

Seeking:

WOMAN:
Female, 27-55, person of color. Mezzo/mezzo-soprano (B3-C#5) Plays both Astrov and
Yelena. Astrov is a an overworked and alcoholic doctor who is in love with Yelena. Yelena is The
Professor’s second wife who is aware of her power over men and is also seeking a deeper
connection with The Professor’s daughter Sonya. Looking for an actor who is open to an
experimental process.. They also need to be able to sing complicated choral acapella music.

MAN:
Male, 27-55, person of color. Baritone/baritenor (D3-F4). Plays Astov, Vanya and Waffles.
Astrov is a an overworked and alcoholic doctor who is in love with Yelena. Vanya is a man who is
consumed with the idea that he has wasted his life. Waffles is a poor landowner who lives on the
estate and provides comic relief with his inappropriate comments. Looking for an actor who is
open to an experimental process.. They also need to be able to sing complicated choral acapella
music.

Caryl Churchill’s play looks at our deepest fears. The play depicts a chilling world where everyone
is at war, and not even the birds in the trees or the river below can be trusted. We see the world
through the eyes of Joan who has just seen something she shouldn’t have. She’s uncovered a
terrible secret that will change the course of her life.

Seeking:

OLDER JOAN:
Female age 30-40. Any ethnicity. Still trying to process the world around her, her curiosity leads her to continue to question the horrible events happening around her. She makes hats for a living.

HARPER:
Female, age 40-55, any ethnicity. Evasive and tries to hide the truth about the world from Young Joan.

TODD:
Male, age 25-40, any ethnicity. Meets Older Joan while making hats. He has been doing it much longer than her. Doesn’t question the world as deeply.

The story of a lovable conman who warms his way into the heart of small town America has never
been more relevant. 2017 is the 60th anniversary of this American classic musical.

Seeking:

HAROLD HILL:
Male, 30-40, Caucasian. Tenor. Extremely charismatic conman who convinces the residents of River City, Iowa to open their wallets for his marching band scheme.

MARIAN PAROO:
Female, 25-30, African American. Soprano. The town librarian who also teaches piano lessons. She knows that Harold is a conman but despite that, falls for him and allows herself to be vulnerable for maybe the first time.

MARCELLUS WASHBURN:
Male, 25-35, any ethnicity. Tenor. And old friend and fellow conman of Harold’s who now lives in River City. He helps Harold acclimate to the town and is complicit in the con. Comic relief.

MAYOR SHINN:
Male, 35-55, any ethnicity. Chorus singing only. Mayor of River City who is very protective of his daughter and his wife has the last word on everything. Talks a lot but says very little.

EULALIE MACKECKNIE SHINN:
Female, age 35-55, any ethnicity. Alto. The Mayor’s wife who is in the inner society circle in town and is also unaware of how ridiculous she can sometimes be.

MRS. PAROO:
Female, age 50-70, African American. Mezzo-Soprano. A widow and Marian and Winthrop’s mother. Obsessed with her daughter finding a man, and most definitely falls for Harold Hill’s con.

WINTHROP PAROO:
Male, age 8-12, African American. Alto. Shy and doesn’t talk much because of his lisp. He believes that he will gain confidence from joining the band.

TOMMY DJILAS:
Male, age 18-25, any ethnicity. Chorus singing only. Is in love with the Mayor’s daughter and is secretly dating her. Harold appoints him assistant band leader. Charismatic, smooth talker, and well-intentioned. Dancer or very comfortable with movement.

ZANEETA SHINN:
Female, age 18-25, any ethnicity. Chorus singing only. The daughter of the Mayor and secretly dating Tommy Djilas despite her parents’ disapproval. Flighty, but knows what she wants. Dancer or very comfortable with movement.

FEMALE ENSEMBLE:
Female, age 18-35, any ethnicity.. Non Union. Will play townspeople of River City.

MALE ENSEMBLE:
Male, age 18-35, any ethnicity. Non Union. Will play townspeople of River City.
