Preparation
Musical auditions: Prepare EITHER a brief song OR 32 bars and a one-minute monologue.
Dramatic auditions: Prepare a brief monologue and have a brief contrasting monologue ready if asked.
Please bring a picture and resume, stapled together.

NOTE: Accompanist will be provided from 9:30am -1 pm only. This section of the EPA is reserved for those who wish to sing as all or part of their audition.

THE OUTGOING TIDE
by Bruce Graham. Director: James Glossman.
1st rehearsal May 14, 2013; Runs May 31 – June 16.
All roles available:
GUNNER: Early 70’s. Tough and resilient. Unexpectedly subversive sense of humor. Working-class Philadelphia all his life. Just HATES the notion of losing his marbles and thus his independence and dignity. In flashbacks, must easily transition both to his own middle age and early twenties.
JACK: 49. Middle-aged professional. Desperate to get ahold of his life before it's too late. Loves his parents; finds them funny and maddening in equal parts. Does everything possible to make things right.
PEG: 60’s. Smart, observant, and attentive of others. Working-class Philly like her husband, whom she adores; and with whom she shares an unexpected sense of humor. Determined to keep her life and her family intact. In flashbacks, must easily transition to her own middle age, and to the shy, self-conscious teenage Catholic school girl she once was.

LOVE/SICK

To play various characters late 30s-early 40s.
We are open to all shapes, sizes, colors. Actors should look like "real people," not movie stars-- could have a few extra pounds, etc. LOVE/SICK is set in the suburbs, and we want our cast to reflect the increasing diversity of the suburbs.
Each actor in LOVE/SICK will be playing 5 roles. Actors should be very funny, imaginative, and soulful. Must be able to handle heightened language and "magical" events with simplicity, imagination, truth. Fearless playing passion, joy, heartbreak on a dime, letting it be hilarious when it wants to but keeping it real (classical actors typically do well in Cariani world).
Actors must be mercurial: they should be excellent with comedy and drama; they must be able to play high status and low status; they must have the capacity to play innocence and vulnerability in one scene, worldliness and strength in another. They must be prepared be "alpha" in some scenes and really drive them; they must be able to be receive aggression and craziness and simply ride others. We are looking for actors who know how to fight for their love lives. As you prepare, please don’t worry too much about differentiating the characters. The stories will take care of that. F. Scott Fitzgerald wrote, “The sentimental person thinks things will last—the romantic person has a desperate confidence that they won’t." The characters in LOVE/SICK are romantics. They are fighting for their love lives. They are desperately confident that things are going to go bad. But they fight like hell to make sure that they don’t.

BERNARD: 30s-40s. American bachelor living in Paris. A ladies man and architect who thinks he has it all figured out, and a system that works. Until it doesn’t. Handsome, stylish, and trying to keep it together.
BERTHA: 50s. Bernard’s long-time housekeeper and confidant. Critical, long-suffering, efficient and loyal.
ROBERT: 30s-40s. Bernard’s boyhood friend from America. A Wisconsin farm boy in Paris to find a fiancée. Lovably simple, green, and stunned by Bernard’s lifestyle and system. Seeking strong comic actor.
GLORIA: 20s-30s. Bernard’s American fiancee. A stewardess. Confident. Cheery. Energetic. With an appetite.
GABRIELLA: 20s-30s. Bernard’s Italian fiancee. A stewardess. Sensual. Sentimental. Fiery. With an Italian accent.
GRETCHEN: 20s-30s. Bernard’s German fiancee. A stewardess. Aggressive. Passionate. Statuesque. And tragically vulnerable. With a German accent.

MARVELOUS WONDERETTES- CAPS AND GOWNS

BETTY JEAN: 18 and 28. Betty Jean is the self-anointed clown of the group, always vying for attention from her best friend Cindy Lou. (Alto with strong low range.)
CINDY LOU: 18 and 28. The "bad girl" of the group. It seems that things always go her way, making Betty Jean crazy. (Mezzo Soprano with belt–sings lead on many songs.)
MISSY: 18 and 28. Always the over-achiever of the group, Missy is the one to cover for mistakes and is always ready to jump in and save the day. She has been best friends with Suzy since elementary school. (Soprano with wide range and very high vocals.)
SUZY: 18 and 28. Gum-chewing Suzy is happy-go-lucky, a little giddy and a little silly. She finds great pleasure in everything she does; the sillier it is, the more fun she finds it. Her best friend is Missy. (Mezzo Alto with a sweet, soulful sound and big belts.)

BILL W. AND DR. BOB
by Samuel Shem and Janet Surrey. Director: Brendan Burke.
1st rehearsal: August 27, 2013. Runs September 13 – September 29.
All Roles Available:
BILL W.: 40s. Driven. Former high-flying stockbroker, now a failed businessman battling alcoholism, before it was known as such. Raised to win, and with an adventurer streak, he is determined to succeed. Could ‘talk a dog off a meat truck’.
LOIS: 40’s. Bill’s wife. Loves him, wants a family. Has tried everything she can think of to help, including drinking with him. Feels alone and helpless over him. Wants change desperately, but has chosen to stay to find meaning.
DR. BOB: 50’s. Midwestern Doctor battling alcoholism as a secret drunk. Lacks Anne’s faith in religion. Has a growing cynical sense of humor. Has researched and read extensively to figure it out for himself. Finds his solution in the companionship of Bill.
ANNE: 50’s. Dr. Bob’s wife. Principled, a woman of faith. Loves the man she ‘used to know’ and can’t think of him alone. Has lost faith in Bob. Is helped by the companionship and empathy of Lois.
MAN: 30’s-40’s. Plays multiple roles. Ability to be different characters, many with a comic feel, but at least one that is primarily dramatic.
WOMAN: 20’s- 30’s. Plays multiple roles.
