Breakdown
ROCKET TO THE MOON is set in the oppressive heat of a New York summer, where the waiting room of Ben Stark's dental practice serves as the backdrop to his mid-life crisis as he attempts to escape the confines of his life by having an affair with his secretary, Cleo.
In the play, Odets develops many of the themes familiar to his audience from his earlier and more overtly political work: economic pressures, the ability of the individual to rise above his circumstances, and the effects of personal responsibility on ambition.
ROCKET TO THE MOON occupies a significant place in the oeuvre of Clifford Odets, in spite of the fact that this tender, richly psychological play is little-known and rarely produced. .
SEEKING
PHIL COOPER
(late 40's, male) A tall, imposing, big-boned man, who is also a dentist like Ben, but more boyish, immature, and emotionally volatile. He is high-strung and very thin-skinned.
FRENCHY
(30's, male) Tall and thin, fiercely intelligent and self-possessed with a philosophical, academic bent and full of opinions about the meaning of life.
WILLY WAX
(50's, male) Small of stature with a slight build, he exudes confidence; in fact he's cocky, even pugnacious and more than a little sleazy around the edges. Willy Wax embodies a kind of show biz energy, smarmy self-confidence and bonhomie that conceals his ruthless ambition and manipulativeness.
BEN STARK
(40's, male) A dentist and a true Everyman. Not handsome, not unattractive, not tall, not short, rather mousy and timid, a bit of a nerd, but still waters run deep and Ben eventually discovers his reckless and deeply passionate side, rebelling against convention and respectability.
BELLE STARK
(40’s, female) Ben's wife. Not unattractive, but the bloom is off the rose. She could be, perhaps, a few pounds overweight. She has a strong, even domineering personality that most people would describe as shrewish. In reality, though, Belle is a vulnerable, emotionally needy woman who just wants to be loved. However, her practical, calculating, even mercenary approach to life works against that possibility.
CLEO SINGER
(early 20's, female) A very beautiful, naïve, simple, and uneducated young woman trying to create just the opposite impression. She should have a distinctive New York accent and spunkiness (think Judy Holliday in Born Yesterday). Cleo is trying hard to pass as a sophisticated, independent young woman; in fact, she comes off as transparently pretentious and emotionally fragile.
MR PRINCE
(late '60's) Stereotypically Jewish, flamboyant, grandiose, and quite formal in the manner of a 19th century actor. He has a deeply ironic, jet-black sense of humor and a philosophical disposition. Also very mercurial. His mood can turn from benevolent and courtly to blistering rage and invective in an instant.
