Please prepare a 90-second cut of a musical theatre song in the style of the show. Please provide your own sheet music. An accompanist will be provided.

Breakdown

RAGTIME
We are seeking actors interested in creating an ensemble piece: collaborative, spontaneous, willing to jump in and try new approaches with the material. We are interested equally in building a multi-ethnic company as finding great actors for each role, both principals and ensemble.

We are currently only seeking actors for the ADULT roles in the show. Auditions for CHILDREN will be held at a later date.


MOTHER
(Female, 30-40, Anglo-American). The consummate wife and mother. A kind woman with incredible moral fiber. Refined, intelligent, and graceful. She is accepting of others. Mezzo-Soprano.

COALHOUSE
(Male, 25-35, African-American). A proud and talented pianist. He is sophisticated, with a romantic demeanor and gentle heart though an intimidating build. Confident and stubborn. Baritone with strong top range.

TATEH
(Male, 35-45, Eastern European/Latino/Middle Eastern). The haggard artist and father. He wears the trials and tribulations of his past on his sleeve, but remains optimistic. Full of genuine drive and heart. Tenor.

FATHER
(Male, 35-45, Anglo-American). Successful man who enjoys being the family breadwinner. Cautious, resistant to change. Baritone.

SARAH
(Female, 20-30, African-American). Filled with a strong will to live fueled by an innocent spirit. Falls deeply in love with Coalhouse after much resistance. Mezzo-Soprano.

YOUNGER BROTHER
(Male, 20-30, Anglo-American). Passionate anarchist. Intense and high-strung. Influenced by Emma Goldman’s teachings. Tenor.

EVELYN NESBIT
(Female, 18-30, Anglo-American/Latina/Middle Eastern/Asian). Beautiful vaudeville performer. Thrust into the limelight after the high profile murder of her lover, the world is her stage. Mezzo-Soprano.

EMMA GOLDMAN
(Female, 40+, Eastern European, Latina, Middle Eastern/Asian). Social activist with an unapologetically demanding presence. A leader and a powerful woman. Alto.

HARRY HOUDINI
(Male, 30-40, Eastern European, Latino, Middle Eastern/Asian). The famous magician/bodybuilder. He stands as the symbol of the “American Dream.” Tenor.

BOOKER T. WASHINGTON
(Male, 35-55, African-American). Incredible intelligent social activist. Eloquent, articulate, distinguished. Baritone.

HENRY FORD
(Male, 40-55, Anglo-American). The great American entrepreneur. Ahead of his time. Bari-tenor.

GRANDFATHER/J.P. MORGAN
(Male, 50+, Anglo-American). Grandfather is mother’s very conservative father. He is retired, gruff and outspoken. J.P. Morgan is the successful American banking mogul. Baritone.

SARAH’S FRIEND
(Female, 20-40, African-American). Gospel lyric-soprano or alto range.

STANFORD WHITE/WILLIE CONKLIN
(Male, 30-45, Anglo-American) Baritone or Tenor.

HARRY K THAW/ADMIRAL PEARY
(Male, 30-45, Anglo-American) Baritone or Tenor.


ENSEMBLE
(Male and Female, to play 20+, all ethnicities). Seeking a diversity of 6-10 excellent singer/actors to double as both ensemble members and understudies for principal roles.
