Breakdown

The production is set in the mid-1800s in Venice and Cyprus. Speaking the text with clarity and brilliance, and actors with training and experience in the classics, are a must.

CAST:
Teagle Bougere- OTHELLO

SEEKING:

IAGO
Age: early to late 30s. He is a man passed over for promotion and success. Malicious, spiteful, jealous and phenomenally manipulative. He is, however, so cunning and so adept at play-acting that he is able to masquerade as a true and devoted friend. He enjoys the pain and anguish he causes others. He possesses a terrific, though mean-spirited, sense of humor. Often speaks directly to the audience.

DESDEMONA
A young Venetian woman of high birth. Age: mid 20s. Determined, sexual, but very faithful. Sure of what she wants in life. Considering her traditional upbringing, she is surprisingly independent. She is proud of, and deeply in love with Othello, a black general.

CASSIO
Age 26-28. Handsome, devoted, educated, honorable, appealing, well-spoken, and romantic. A gentleman-soldier. Having always been a “golden boy”, he is inexperienced in the cruelties and disappointments of life. They come as a shock.

EMILIA
Age: 32-35. Attractive, blunt. A bit coarse, perhaps, but very faithful to her friend, Desdemona. She wishes her own marriage was happier, and always looks for ways to appease and please her husband, Iago. Though in her mind she understands a woman’s “place” in the world, and her lot in life, she vehemently stands up to Othello to defend Desdemona. Like most prejudiced people, she is suspicious of the Moor.

RODERIGO
Age: mid-30s to 40. A foolish, rich Venetian gentleman. Easily manipulated, with a feeble moral sense. He goes to great lengths to “possess” Desdemona, descending deeper and deeper into debt and moral chaos.
