Preparation Instructions:

Please prepare ONE brief vocal selection that is appropriate for the role(s) to which you feel you are most suited. An accompanist will be provided, bring sheet music in your key and you MUST bring 5 (FIVE) pictures and resumes stapled together. Representatives with casting authority from each show will be present, you are free to bring in something specifically appropriate for any of the shows, or perform ONE general selection that shows you off best - but, as in years past, we are NOT permitting more than one vocal selection.

Synopsis: In this sweeping historical fiction, Joseph Cohen is a Jewish-German boxer whose ambition is to win the Berlin Olympics of 1936. His dreams are thwarted by the Nazi regime, and Joseph’s fight for the gold becomes the battle for his family, identity, and country. Left with nothing, Joseph must reinvent himself in a new land. THE GOLD is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the journey of self-discovery that each of us takes as we search for purpose in our lives.


[JOSEPH COHEN] male, 25-47, leading man, Baritone. Jewish German Boxer who was orphaned at a young age and taken in by his boxing coach. He is training to compete in the Olympics of 1936. He is tragically idealistic, powerful, honorable, yet unpolished. His journey in “The Gold” carries him from a young, lover and hopeful boxing competitor through losing everything, and onto facing redefining himself and his life.

[SARAH AARONSON] female, 24-32, leading lady, full lyric soprano with a rich middle/ low register. Sarah is the soul of the show. She is a German Jew and Joseph’s love. She is beautiful, wise and grounded. She and Joseph marry, and she has a son, Aaron, who, they give up to be protected while they are taken into concentration camps. Sarah dies in the camps after refusing the sexual advances of a Nazi commander, but her presence and memory carries Joseph through the show.


[KARL FRITZSCHE] male, 26-33, Baritone/Tenor. German boxer and Joseph’s best friend and boxing opponent. Karl is gregarious, arrogant but ultimately a follower. Karl wins Olympic Gold, while the rightful competitor, Joseph, was unfairly taken out of the competition. Karl becomes a Nazi, but also saves Joseph and Sarah’s son, Aaron. Karl redeems himself by committing suicide so that Joseph can escape the Nazi camp.

[MAX BERNSTEIN] male, 43-65, Baritone/Bass. German boxing coach who is half Jewish. Max runs a successful gym, and takes Joseph in as an orphaned teen, teaching him to box. Max is a powerful stand for what is right, but realizes his limitations. He leaves Germany for Palestine before it is too late. He is instrumental in the State of Israel, and helping Joseph build a new life after the war.

[GABRIELLE FRITZSCHE] female, 24-46, Soprano/Alto. German, the sister of Karl and the friend of Sarah who takes Aaron during the war and hides him as her own. Gabrielle is primarily an acting role, with some singing

[YOUNG AARON] male, 10-13, strong singer and actor. Aaron becomes and athlete like is father, and retains a hopeful innocence despite his tough circumstances. He develops a strong connection with Julie as two children in hiding during the war, and they take care of each other. He keeps in touch with Julie through letters.

[YOUNG JULIE] female, 9-12, strong singer and actress. An orphaned Jewish German girl in hiding, who is hopeful, pragmatic and takes care of Aaron. She is strong and willing to take on life after the war when she relocates to Palestine with the Jewish refugees.

[AARON] male, 18-21, Baritone/Tenor. A bright, hopeful athlete and student who was raised by Gabrielle without religion, and believing his parents are dead in Chicago. Aaron becomes disillusioned with his life in Chicago as he loses touch of Julie. An identity crisis forces him to leave his life for Israel in search of himself and his lost Julie, where ultimately, he also discovers his father, alive and well.

[JULIE] female, 18-21, Soprano with full chest voice. Athletic. She is a realist and enters the Israeli army at 18. She loves Aaron, but doesn’t believe they will ever be together. She is beautiful, but also strong and tough.

[RABBI/ ENSEMBLE] male, age range 45 plus, baritone

[MR. AARONSON] male, age range 50 plus: Baritone/ Bass, Sarah’s father who is lost in the camps.

[MRS. AARONSON/MS. KLEIN] female, ages 50 plus, alto, Sarah’s mother who is lost in the camps. Head of orphanage in Israel.

[FRITZ/ ENSEMBLE] male, age range 20-30, Baritone/ tenor Nazi soldier, athletic, various roles in Israel

[RELIEF WORKER/ ENSEMBLE] female, age range 20-30, Soprano/ Alto, helps Joseph to try and locate his son after the war; various

[NAZI COMMANDER/ ENSEMBLE] male, age range 30-40, Baritone, Bass; various

[MALE ENSEMBLE], 1: age range 20-30, various (Baritone/ tenor)

[FEMALE ENSEMBLE], 1: age range 20-35, alto/ soprano, various

[TODDLER AARON] male, age range 3- 4 years old, (could be a small 5 year old); the baby is only in the scene briefly when Sarah and Joseph hold him and say goodbye, and then he is passed off to Karl and taken away. There is no speaking required, but and ease of working with strangers. It is brief, but extremely important to the piece. (WE will be asking friends in NYC for this child).
