Beginning at 9am (CST) on Friday, February 23, performers may request an audition appointment by emailing casting@milwaukeerep.com. Auditions will be given on a first come, first serve basis--date and time requests may not be granted. Appointments will be assigned during regular business hours- please allow a 48-hour response time after sign-up.

PREPARATION

We will ask for a current headshot and resume with each audition. For non-musical auditions: 1 Classic and 1 Contemporary Monologue (not to exceed 3 minutes total). For musical auditions: a brief cut of a song no longer than one minute; 1 Classic or Contemporary Monologue (60-90 seconds). Note: For those auditioning for the musical, we are giving actors the option to use the provided accompaniment and sheet music or select a song of their choice with their own accompaniment. Materials can be found here:

BREAKDOWN

An Equity Monitor will not be provided. The producer will run all aspects of this audition.

SYNOPSIS: “For better or worse” takes on new meaning when a mysterious guest requests a kiss at Peter and Rita’s wedding—and their lives are forever changed. Originally a South Coast Repertory world premiere, the Tony Award-winning play returns as a musical. Refreshed, reimagined and elevated by a breathtaking score, this modern fable soars through the peaks and valleys of love—the perfect salve for our disconnected times.

SEEKING:

Peter - Male 20s-30s A smart, loving but complicated everyman. An off-beat romantic, falls in love with Rita and wants to build a life with her, but his clear path forward is quickly thrown off course. Vocal: Strong pop tenor or bari-tenor with a bit of grit and strong falsetto.

Taylor – Male, 30s. Peter’s best friend who introduces the couple. A big hearted ‘bro’ with a great sense of humor. Vocal: Pop tenor to an A.

Angie – Female or Non-Binary 30s-40s. Rita’s best friend and co-worker. A tough, funny, lesbian bartender who is always there when you need her with a joke or good advice. Vocal: Pop mezzo/belter with an edge.

Rita’s Mom – Female, 50s-60s. Funny, smart, and spunky. A neurosurgeon with both heart and intellect. Sweet and caring but not easily fooled. Vocal: Mezzo/Soprano.

Leah – Female, 40s-early 50s. Julius’ daughter. Salt of the earth and sensitive. Cares deeply for her father and is concerned for his advancing age and health. Vocal: Strong belter in the mezzo/alto range with a strong contemporary mix.

Rita – Female, 20s - 30s. A funny and charming, but cynical woman. Her innate warmth softens the corners of her dry, blunt sense of humor. She loves Peter, but is unsure of her place in life. When she is embodied by Julius, she becomes vivacious, spry and invigorated by life. Vocal: Folky pop voice, with belt.

Rita's Dad – Male, 50s-60s. An affable, warm, and funny man who loves his family but can quickly toughen up to protect them. A dentist who likes to chat. Ability to play the banjo a plus. Vocal: Baritone/Baritone.

Julius – Male, 70s, An elderly man who wanders into the wedding and upon contact with the bride is embodied by Rita who becomes trapped in his older body as she waits for Peter to “recognize” her. Vocal: Baritone G2 - F4

Ensemble (4) – Any gender expressions. Late 20s-40s. Strong singers who are also versatile actors to play a variety of speaking and singing roles. i.e. wedding officiant, waiters, party guests, etc. Vocal: Strong contemporary musical theatre, pop voices who can blend and sing harmonies.

MARIE AND ROSETTA

SYNOPSIS: Hailed as the “Godmother of Rock ‘n Roll,” Sister Rosetta Tharpe influenced rock icons from Elvis Presley to Jimi Hendrix. Bringing fierce guitar playing and sizzling swing to gospel music, Rosetta was a trailblazer, a young Black woman singing at church in the morning and the Cotton Club at night. This play with music chronicles Rosetta’s first rehearsal with a young protégée, Marie Knight, as they prepare for a tour that would establish them as one of the great duet teams in musical history.

Showcased hit songs include “Blue Suede Shoes,” “Fever,” “Walk the Line,” “Folsom Prison Blues,” “Hound Dog,” and more.

Keith Bunin’s play is a smart, funny and compassionate story about our capacity for invention and re-invention when life goes off the rails. After critically acclaimed runs at La Jolla Playhouse and Lincoln Center Theater, the play makes its regional premiere at Milwaukee Rep helmed by AD Mark Clements.

When a storm floods the roads and forces the women together, a series of misunderstandings breaks open the secrets both women have taught themselves to ignore. A bilingual play with Spanish and English supertitles, Espejos: Clean is a potent look at isolation, the power of being seen, and the ways people can grow around their own damaged places.

Four burly lumberjacks live in a state of manly bliss at the Haywire Lumber Camp in Northern Wisconsin – until an encounter with a plucky mail order bride interrupts life as they know it. The result is big belly laughs and beautiful music.

As the Guinness & whiskey start a-flowing, so do the stories and songs--charting Ireland's history of love, resilience, and good humor. From jigs and fairy tales to drinking songs and war stories, sit back as these master storyteller-musicians capture the best of Irish culture and have some craic along the way. Featuring such Irish classics as Danny Boy, Whiskey in the Jar”, Molly Malone and “The Irish Rover”, the night will surely have you singing along and ordering another round…or two!

SYNOPSIS: The beloved musical comes to the Stackner Cabaret, with an actor-musician duo at its heart. Two New Yorkers in their twenties fall in and out of love over the course of five years: Cathy, the woman, tells her story backwards while Jamie, the man, tells his story chronologically; the two characters only meet once, at their wedding in the middle of the show. Told by two actor-musicians who create the world with a cellist onstage.

SYNOPSIS: A Christmas Carol is one of the best-known and well-loved stories in the English language. During the course of one memorable Christmas Eve, the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future help Ebenezer Scrooge discover that it is never too late to change his miserly ways. Milwaukee Rep favorite Matt Daniels returns to play Scrooge, as enchanting music, dance, costumes, scenery and special effects will once again fill the theater to tell this timeless tale of love, hope and redemption.
