John Ridge (1800s): Cherokee man, late 20s to late 30s, the son of Major Ridge, John Ridge was an influential leader in the Cherokee Nation in the 1820s and 30s until he was assassinated in 1839. He served as Clerk to the Cherokee Nation National Committee (the Council). Signed the Treaty of New Echota in 1835. Husband of Sally (Sarah Bird Northrup).
Sarah Polson (today): Cherokee woman, late 20s to early 30s. Direct descendant of Major Ridge, Sally and John Ridge. Sister to Watie. Cousin to Flora. Sarah is a graduate of Yale Law School and citizen of Cherokee Nation. She returns home to Cherokee Nation after a long absence.
Major Ridge (1800s): Cherokee man, late 50s to late 60s. Given the title “Major” after fighting with General Andrew Jackson in the War of 1812, Major Ridge was a very influential leader in Cherokee Nation politics in the 1810s, 20s, and 30s, until he was assassinated in 1839. He is the father of John Ridge and uncle of Elias Boudinot. He served many years as the Speaker of the Cherokee Nation Council, and as Chief John Ross’s assistant, until the divide that takes place in this play. Signed the Treaty of New Echota in 1835. Also plays Roger (Ridge) Polson (today): Direct descendant of Major Ridge, Sally, and John Ridge, father of Sarah Polson and Watie Smith. Uncle to Flora. Elias Boudinot (1800s): Cherokee man, early to mid 30s. John Ridge’s cousin. His father is Major Ridge’s brother. Elias Boudinot went to Cornwall for school with his cousin John and then returned home to Cherokee Nation and became the first Editor of the Cherokee Phoenix. Signed the Treaty of New Echota in 1835. And Watie (today): Direct descendant of Major Ridge, Sally, and John Ridge. He is Sarah’s brother and Roger Ridge Polson’s son. Cousin to Flora. Watie works for the Cherokee Nation Police Force.
John Ross (1800s): Mixed race Cherokee man with a White father, mid-late 30s. Chief of Cherokee Nation from 1828 until his death in the 1860s. Led the Cherokee Nation through significant turmoil, including the removal and the Civil War. He is revered by Cherokees today as one of the most important Cherokee leaders of all times. Also plays Jim Ross (today): Direct descendant of John Ross. Jim is Sarah’s boss in the Attorney General’s office.
Andrew Jackson (1800s): White man, mid-late 30s. An American soldier and statesman who served as President of the United States from 1829 to 1837. He believed Native Americans were an inferior race that should disappear from the face of the Earth. Also plays Ben (today): Special Victims Unit Police Officer in present day Oklahoma. He becomes Sarah’s fiancé. He is non-Native American.
Samuel Worcester (1800s): White man, 30’s-40’s. Missionary who goes to live in Cherokee Nation. He worked with Elias to translate the Bible into Cherokee. His arrest in 1832 sparked one of the most significant cases in United States history in the Supreme Court: Worcester v. Georgia. Also plays Mitch (today): Lawyer with a specialty in family law, non-Native American, living in Oklahoma. Childhood friend of Sarah and Watie.
Sally (1800s): White woman, late 20’s. John Ridge’s wife, and daughter of the schoolmaster in Cornwall, Connecticut. She is non-Native American. Flora, Sarah, Roger, and Watie are all her direct descendants. Also plays Flora (today): Cherokee woman. Direct descendant of Major Ridge, John Ridge, and Sally. Citizen of Cherokee Nation. She runs the family cemetery where Major Ridge and John Ridge are buried, just a few hundred yards from where John was murdered. Roger is her uncle, and Sarah and Watie are her cousins.
Chorus Man (1800s and today): White man 30’s – 50’s. This actor portrays Drunk Man, Gov. Forsythe, Georgia Guard, William Wirt, Bartender, and Reverend Schermerhorn.

Noura: Mid 40s. Female. Married to Tareq. An architect.
Tareq: Mid 40’s to early 50’s. Male. Christian Iraqi. Noura’s husband. A former surgeon originally from Baghdad. Living in New York for eight years, he is passionate about his new status as an American Citizen. Intellectual and progressive, he now works as a hospitalist after years struggling as a refugee in America. Charming, appealing, sexual. Deeply in love with his wife. A committed and passionate husband and father. He tries hard to bury the years of trauma and war to which he was witness as a surgeon in Iraq. Every decision he makes is for the benefit of his family.
Rafa'a: Mid 40’s to early 50’s. Muslim Iraqi. Noura’s childhood neighbor from Mosul. A close friend of the family and a surrogate uncle to their young son, Yazen. A progressive, feminist, OBGYN. Introspective, empathetic, intelligent. Has an intensity to him, and a playful sense of humor. In love with Noura and her true confidant but has been prevented from ever having a romantic relationship with her because of their different faiths. Torn between expressing his love for Noura and staying in close relationship to her family.
Maryam: 20s. A young woman from Mosul. Now in her first semester of studies in America. A refugee. Survivor. Feminist.
Yazen/Alex: 11- 13 years old. Noura and Tareq's son. Middle Eastern. Joyful, with ease. A little messy. Can have long hair. Very free and expressive. Mostly interested in playing video games, has been almost fully Americanized, somewhat to the consternation of his parents. An innocent.

Otis, 57 in 2018. A native New Yorker. A smart, powerful and charming man now chastened by a New York Times piece about his sex-and-power transgressions 15 years earlier. 42 in 2003, a cocky, lovable Peter Pan-type who runs his own non-profit that brings art to city kids.
Penelope, F, 38 and a surgeon in 2018; 23 and a deferred med school student in 2003. We see as a capable and headstrong woman in 2018, and a tentative but brave young woman in 2003 and 2004, finding her footing as an adult, professionally and sexually.
Vanessa, F, 39 in 2018 and sober, trying to rebuild her life; 25 in 2004 and a hilarious hot mess of a party girl.
Jaime, M, 37 and an education consultant married to Penelope in 2018; 24 and a nice but romantically casual guy in 2004. We see him at various stages of emotional maturity as he gets older.
Ron, M, 50s to 60s, a New York Times reporter in 2018 determinedly pursuing a story about Otis' transgressions. Also plays Ken, M, 50s in 2004, who is Whitney's protective father that bonds with Otis over sports while checking out Whitney's new job.
Whitney, F, 36 and determined to grow up in 2018, 22 and naive in 2004; also plays Rebecca, F, 39, Otis' Type A pregnant wife in 2004 and City Hall Intern, wide eyed and 22 in 2018

Sandro Botticelli, M, 30s, male identifying; Bacchus-like; a man of pleasure; sumptuous, ribald, mischievous, witty, and charismatic; think Rufus Wainwright meets Russell Brand. Actor must be innately very funny and charming; everyone wants to sleep with him not because of his looks per se, but because of his aura. Actor must be comfortable with full-frontal nudity. Requires nudity.
Clarice Orsini, F, 30s, female identifying; smart, powerful, and sexy; knows what she wants, but possesses a vulnerability that allows her to have our empathy. Actor must be comfortable with full nudity. Requires nudity .
Lorenzo de Medici, M, 40s, male identifying; virile and cunning; razor-sharp intelligence; dangerous; only out for himself; follows the logic of power at any cost.
Leonardo da Vinci, M, 20s, male identifying; apprentice and lover to Botticelli; prelude to a genius; articulate and grounded. Actor must be comfortable with full-frontal nudity. Requires nudity.
Poggio di Chullu, M, 30s, male identifying; close friend and less well-known contemporary of Botticelli; rotund, sassy, and camp; natural comic; confident in exactly who he is.
Girolamo Savonarola, M, 60s, male identifying; populist; he should be sinister, but in a senior Republican senator kind of way--scary, but persuasive and charismatic; not a dummy or a ghoul.
Madre Maria, F, 50s, female identifying; an effusive Italian mother; wise, bawdy, and a bit crude; inexhaustible humor.
