VIOLET / COUNTRY VIOLET: very dark-skinned African-American, plays herself from late teens to early 50s, a hair dresser, shrinking, slender if not bone skinny, contained rage at any moment that can and will explode, folks in The City call her Violent.
JOE TRACE / COUNTRY JOE : African-American, plays himself from early 20s to early 50s, a sample case man, bold, gregarious, unobviously handsome, folks trust him instantly.
DORCAS : very light-skinned African-American, to play late teens-early 20s, tempestuous, haughty, insecure, unwomanly, a plain jane.
A PIANO: very dark skinned African-American, late teens-early 20s, covers FELICE, Dorcas’ only friend, a pretty girl that doesn’t know she’s pretty, and CIGARETTE GIRL.
A CLARINET: 20s, Mixed race of African-American and Caucasian, looks white, a blonde haired, blue eyed, arrogant Mulatto Adonis who projects a lot of swag; covers GOLDEN GRAY, and PARROT, Violet’s blonde and green pet bird, and ACTON.
A TRUMPET: African-American, 60s, covers ALICE MANFRED, Dorcas’ aunt who is a seamstress, repressed and stern in her repression; also covers TRUE BELLE who is Violet’s truth-telling grandmother.
A SAX: African-American, 50s, covers MALVONNE, Violet and Joe’s busy body neighbor, COUNTRY GOSSIP, CITY MADAM.
