Breakdown

Note: All characters with the exception of PENNY are New Englanders: flinty, direct, and outspoken.

SEEKING:

Maggie.
36. Slightly faded good looks and sexiness. She strives to be strong as she raises her teen-aged daughter without much help from her divorced husband. There is a fierce air of survival about her as she struggles to make ends meet on a low level service salary. Very abrupt and outspoken and confrontational and defensive. Underneath her assumed bravado is a lot of pain and regret. Large role.

Linda.
Early 50’s. Her mother. Also a tough talking survivor. She is strongly defensive of the choices she has made in life and strongly protective of her daughter and grand-daughter. Aggressive and unafraid of anyone. She has lived a life of economic deprivation but clings to her dignity and self image as a good mother. Large role.

Lou.
36. Maggie’s ex-husband. He was a jock in high school and is now sliding towards middle age. He tries to put on a front of a man in charge, but is undercut by Maggie and Linda. He is a good person, kind and considerate. He tries hard to be a good father and a good husband to Penny, but is clearly scarred by past failures and trying to survive the tornado that was his marriage to Maggie. Large role.

Penny.
Late 20’s. She is an interloper in this outspoken New England world, but tries gamely to carry her weight because of her love for Lou. She is by nature much more reserved than the other two women, but always tries her best to reach out to them. She is kind and very supportive. She is NOT, however, a pushover and knows what she believes in and lives according to her Midwestern beliefs. Medium role.

Girl.
17. Outwardly quite cynical for someone her age. Her observation is keen and she believes she knows the failures of her mother and the other women of that generation, and she is determined to not follow in their footsteps. She is rebellious, very blunt and non-sentimental. Underneath, like all young people, she wants to be loved. Large/Medium role.

Boy.
17. A high school sportsman. Handsome, charming, confident. He is very sweet and loving. He is also disarmingly funny in the face of The Girl’s tough defensiveness. A nice boyfriend. Medium/Large role.
