DARJA: Female, 34-45. (dar´ ya) A cleaning woman and factory worker whose luck has been down for ages. She’s a fighter—for her dignity and for her son, Aleks, who refuses to speak to her. She trusts only what is tangible and has little patience for talk, particularly after Tommy cheats on her. She once longed for a lavish life, now all she wants is to get by. Speaks with a Slavic accent.

TOMMY: Male, 35-45. A stubborn, aggressive, and unfaithful husband to Darja. Though he is rough around the edges, he is a softy at heart. His blue-collar work doesn’t make life easy, but when he allows his romantic side to shine, it is clear he truly cares for Darja.

MAKS: Male, 30s. Darja’s first husband. He is loving and playful towards Darja. He is ultimately unable to financially provide for her and they both know it. A gifted singer and harmonicist. Speaks Polish.

VIC: Male, 16. A junior in prep school whose appearance and style suggest the complete opposite. His family is wealthy, and he earns extra cash as a sex worker, but for him money is no object. He is compassionate and immediately offers assistance and encouragement to a hesitant Darja.
