Breakdown

Seeking

Joan of Arc:
Soprano. Adult to play approximately 18 years old. Leaves home to help win back France and crown the king after being guided by outside forces. Spiritual, moral, devoted, at times stubborn. A strong individual who also must face a harsh reality, with her youth sometimes coming into play.

Charles:
Tenor. Late 20s to early 30s. The Dauphin, who later becomes king of France. Insecure in many ways. Wants to do the right thing, but sometimes doesn’t know what that is, especially with the stakes of his kingdom.

Jean d’Aulon:
Tenor. 30s. Joan’s personal knight throughout her quest. Chivalrous, somewhat of a romantic, and very much a glass half-full personality. Will fight for what he believes in and what he believes to be true.

Cauchon:
Baritone. 50s. The English bishop who oversees the trial of Joan. Aggressive, ruthless, manipulative and will stop at nothing to obtain what is best for himself and England. Believes in “the ends justify the means.i

La Tremoille:
Bass. 40s. A senior knight of Charles, as well as his de facto advisor. Skeptical of Joan, and is often contradictory to her goals and visions. A political mind, who is usually able to get into Charles’ ear. A little more subtle in his approach to achieve his goals, compared to Cauchon.

De Beaudricort:
Baritone. Mid 20s to early 30s. A general in the French army, who is considered a leader amongst the soldiers. Loyal, and at times rough around the edges, although he is one of the few to change his mind about Joan after she earns his respect.

De Pasquerel:
Tenor. Mid 20s to early 30s. A priest with the French army. Embraces Joan immediately, both in her demeanor and the mere possibility of a change within her.

Jacque:
Bass/Baritone. Mid 30s to 40s. Joan’s father. Wants his daughter to live the typical life of the time, but eventually realizes that may not be the case.

Ensemble:
Men and women of all ages. Will cover a variety of roles including French villagers, courtiers, spiritual voices, French and English soldiers, etc.
