Breakdown

NOTE:
ALL REHEARSALS AND PERFORMANCES ARE IN TRENTON, NEW JERSEY. The characters of Brett Martin and Hayden Quinn can be played by either women or men. Pronouns may be adjusted accordingly throughout. All characters can be played by actors of any race, although Donnie and Miriam Lawrence should look like father and daughter.

New play. IF I DID THIS
Present day. But time shifts. A single set with three defined spaces the actors can move easily between: the front room of Donnie Lawrence’s country house, an upstairs guest bedroom in the same house with stairs going up to it, and Brett Martin’s office in Manhattan.
Editor Brett Martin hires grieving mystery writer Hal Walker to ghostwrite the story of the century -- what really happened to Donnie Lawrence's wife. He was tried and acquitted of her murder, but everyone believes he is guilty. When Hal goes to Donnie's house to begin interviewing him, he doesn't expect to meet Donnie's fifteen year old daughter, Miriam, or to become so tangled up in the question of Donnie's guilt (or innocence) that it will require the services of police detective Hayden Quinn to sort things out. Who gets to decide what justice needs to be done? Who gets to tell the story?

Seeking:
HAL WALKER (M, 39) - A mystery writer. Unshaven and skinny, like he’s been subsisting for months on whiskey and nightmares.

BRETT MARTIN (M or F, 57) - An editor for a mid-sized publishing company. Very comfortable in the chair.

DONNIE L AWRENCE (M, 48) - Real estate agent. You can tell right off he makes his living selling something.

MIRIAM LAWRENCE (F, 15) - Donnie Lawrence’s daughter. Too young and too old at the same time.

HAYDEN QUINN (M or F, 43) - Detective. Chin high, but dragging every loss behind like an albatross. Comes out swinging.
