Seeking:
MATILDA BINKS
55, black. “Tillie” has worked twenty-seven years as a domestic for the Draytons. Suspicious of John, she is loyal and protective of the Drayton family.
HILARY ST. GEORGE
43, white. Associate Director of the Drayton Gallery. Hilary is an employee of Christina’s and happens to be working at the house when Joanna arrives with John. Her casually racist remarks push Christina to fire her.
CHRISTINA DRAYTON
64, white. Runs the Drayton Gallery. Having taught Joey to treat everyone as equals, her belief in those teachings is challenged when she meets John. Fiercely loving and determined to keep her daughter in her life.
MATT DRAYTON
67, white. Publisher of San Francisco newspaper, The Guardian. A workaholic, Matt does not heed his doctor’s warnings to only work three days a week. While a journalist and a liberal he finds reason to disapprove of Joey and John’s marriage.
JOANNA DRAYTON
23, white. “Joey” recently interned for a medical research hospital in Hawaii. She is bold and stubborn in her love for John and unwavering in her plans to marry him.
DOCTOR JOHN PRENTICE
37, black. A medical research doctor. John cautiously enters the home and his interactions with Joanna’s parents. Intelligent and respectful he will not marry Joey without her parent’s approval.
MONSIGNOR RYAN
75, white. Longtime family friend of the Draytons. He is blunt and sees no issue with Joey and John’s marriage . Monsignor calmly gives Christina and Matt reasons to approve of the relationship.
JOHN PRENTICE SR
63, black. Schoolteacher. Protective and proud of his son, John, he at first strongly disapproves of the marriage as he sees it a threat to all John has worked and built for himself.
MARY PRENTICE
59, black. Department store clerk. Having seen the hurt her son, John, has felt, she can neither approve nor disapprove of the marriage but is highly concerned about her son’s heart.

SEEKING THE FOLLOWING:
BRIDGET O SULLIVAN
The cook, and the First Girl, 32 going on 40. Proud to be surviving in America but isn’t passionate about her job. She is stoically and reluctantly slipping into spinsterhood and finds pleasure drinking throughout her work days. She is pretty but has “let herself-go” somewhat, forcing herself to become old before her time. The kitchen gives her something to do, but it also reminds her of her emigrant sense of dispossession. She has come to terms with the idea that she will never be returning to Ireland, yet the only person that keeps her connected, a desperate connection she resentfully desires with Ireland, is her recently arrived niece, Cathleen.
CATHLEEN O LEARY
22, is the buxom girl as described by O’Neill but she is far from stupid and resents anyone talking down to her. Although she understands her station is her duty and begrudgingly plays her part of the ingratiating Irish charmer complete with volubility and forthright dark humor. She is a proud confident girl and considers her sojourn in America an adventure and not a permanent relocation. She is spirited and passionate and prefers to live in the moment. She wants to learn everything, soak up the excitement of America, like a sponge.
JACK SMYTHE
40, is a hefty fellow. Not fat but awkward maybe, not necessarily handsome but a man who is aware of his own shortcomings as well as his virtues. He almost trips through life accepting his fate, a sadness pertains, but he can find the light when possible. A rascal, he likes to trick and be mischievous as a way of lightening the ever-present somber mood. When his heart is captured he will pursue and persist with a childlike determination. A homebody, he seeks nothing more from life than to be content, happy sometimes, and almost always aware of how finite our time is.

Place: An independent bookstore in an average-sized, unremarkable Midwestern town
1st reh: 4/28/15.
Performs: 5/22 - 6/20/15. Possible Extension to 6/28
SEEKING THE FOLLOWING:
DANIEL
20s, any ethnicity, a typical Midwestern young man. Tall and strong. Daniel is a writer, a recent graduate from the University of Iowa and is currently writing a “real” novel. Daniel returns to this small mid-western town, in order to live in some quiet solace in order to reflect on his past. He interviews for a position at Linda’s store – Books to the Sky – having visited the store when he was young. The story Daniel writes – even though he insists it is not autobiographical – calls upon his favorite Frank O’Hara poems and attempts to sort out something from his past.
LINDA
Late 40s, Filipina, an American immigrant. Linda is the owner of the bookstore “Books to the Sky.” She is maternal yet rigid, supportive yet challenging. It is revealed her son committed suicide when he was 17. An entrepreneur, the bookstore is all she has left after her son’s death and her subsequent divorce. Linda is a lover or writers as well and takes to Daniel fairly quickly although she still sees it as her place to give him advice about how he – a gay man – presents himself in their small, mid-western town. Like Daniel, Linda is grappling with something in her past and sees her new relationship with Daniel as a means to resolve it.
