Breakdown

SEEKING ONE UNDERSTUDY TO COVER BOTH ROLES (actor of all ethnicities encouraged to submit)

ERIE SMITH:
(Role CAST: Forest Whitaker) Male, 40’s – 50’s. A teller of tales. A hustler who bombards the hotel’s new night clerk with stories of his past. Considers himself a player, but underneath it all he’s lonely.

CHARLIE HUGHES:
(Role CAST: Frank Wood) Male, 40’s – 50’s. The new hotel night clerk. Washed up, limp, and running out of life. Has a natural stillness / sadness.

Hughie is a short two-character play set in the lobby of a small hotel on a West Side street in midtown New York during the summer of 1928. The play is essentially a long monologue delivered by a small time hustler named Erie Smith (Forest Whitaker) to the hotel’s new night clerk Charlie Hughes (Frank Wood), lamenting how Smith’s luck has gone bad since the death of Hughie, Hughes' predecessor.
