SUGAR A woman in her 40s. A writer. In recovery. Born into an abusive family, likely in a coal-mining town, and escaped with her mother. Super intelligence and sharp humor that comes from harrowing abuse and addiction combated by a loving mother, a college education and a huge heart. Fierce. Poetic. Loving. A storyteller. Healing herself and others with words. THIS ROLE IS CAST.

BOBBY STRONG 20-35. Idealistic and heroic, he sees the potential for change where others don’t. He becomes the leader of the revolution, and falls in love while doing so. A natural leader, he inspires others to change as well. Vocal range: A2-C5 THIS ROLE IS CAST.

HOPE 20s, female, any ethnicity. Hope starts with a naïve sense of idealism which turns to strength and determination when she starts to learn about the realities of the world. Vocal range: A3-A5. THIS ROLE IS CAST.

CALDWELL CLADWELL 50+, male, any ethnicity. Corrupt and shameless, he is the president and owner of the Urine Good Company. Cladwell takes delight in others misfortunes. Vocal range: A2-G4. THIS ROLE IS CAST.

PENELOPE PENNYWISE 35+, female, any ethnicity. Jaded and streetwise, the warden of the filthiest town urinal. Pennywise comes around to fight the for good when she realizes what she’s been missing out on in life. Vocal range: A3-C6.

[OFFICER LOCKSTOCK] 30s-50s, character is male (theatre is open to performers of ALL gender identities), any ethnicity. The narrator of the story. Self-assured and larger than life, capable of many dark deeds. He claims to be an officer of the law but actually serves a corrupt and broken system. Vocal range: A2-A4

SENATOR FIPP
40+, male, any ethnicity. A follower; cowardly and feckless, a politician in cahoots with Cladwell. Vocal range: C#3-F4. THIS ROLE IS CAST.

LITTLE SALLY 20-40, female, any ethnicity. Streetwise, precocious and blunt. She calls it like she sees it; functions both inside and outside of the structure of the play. Vocal range: A3-E5

OLD MAN STRONG/HOT BLADES HARRY 50-65, male, any ethnicity. Bobby’s father, he inadvertently starts the Urinetown revolution. He stands up for what is right and practical. An accidental activist./Unpredictable, a loose cannon. Vocal range: A2-F4.

JOSEPHINE STRONG 50-65, female, any ethnicity. Bobby’s mother. Gutsy and strong; endures a difficult life. Vocal range: Bb3-D5.

OFFICER BARREL 30s-50s, male, any ethnicity. Walks a beat with Officer Lockstock. The more physical of the two, he has the brawn to Lockstock’s smooth talk. A bully. Vocal range: G2-F4

SOUPY SUE/CALDWELL’S SECRETARY 25-40, female, any ethnicity. Oppressed by the system; high-strung and easily excitable. Vocal range: Bb3-B4

MR. MCQUEEN 30-45, male, any ethnicity. Cladwell’s assistant. A follower; eager to please. Vocal range: B2-E4.

DR. BILLEAUX 35+, male, any ethnicity. The head of research at Urine Good Company; part of Cladwell’s team. Vocal range: E3-A3

ROBBY THE STOCKFISH 20-35, male, any ethnicity. Of the oppressed class, prone to violence as a solution.

MRS. MILLENIUM 30+, female, any ethnicity. Park of Cladwell’s team; she is more motivated by winning than by any particular ideology.

BILLY BOY BILL 20-30, male, any ethnicity. One of the oppressed, easy to rile up.

LITTLE BECKY TWO SHOES 12-15 (please note the age range – we intend to hire Local/Non-AEA child for this role). Of the oppressed class; crass, outspoken, and impulsive. Vocal range: Bb3-F5. THIS ROLE IS CAST.

TINY TOM 12-15. (please note the age range – we intend to hire Local/Non-AEA child for this role). Of the oppressed class; easily impressionable but ready to join a revolution for good. Vocal range: D3A3

ARCHIBALD CRAVEN 35-50, male, any ethnicity. Mary’s uncle and the wealthy lord of Misselthwaite Manor who lives with a curvature of the spine. He continues to mourn his wife Lily's death ten years earlier, and his deep sorrow causes him to hide from his son and ignore his niece. RP. Extremely strong vocalist/soaring tenor - vocal range: C3-A4

DR. NEVILLE CRAVEN 35-50, male, any ethnicity. Archibald’s younger brother. He has taken on much of the running of the estate. Bitter that Lily loved his brother rather than him, his care for his nephew Colin is controlling and misguided. RP. Lyric baritone - vocal range: C3-F#4

LILY 25-35, female, any ethnicity. Mary’s aunt and Archibald’s wife. A ghost who died in childbirth ten years ago. She loved her family dearly, and longs for them to move on in their lives with joy, even from the afterlife. RP. Vocal range: Bb3-D6

BEN WEATHERSTAFF/ENSEMBLE 50+, male, any ethnicity. The gruff estate gardener, he continued to care for Lily’s garden after her death, as he is deeply loyal to her memory. Yorkshire dialect. Vocal range: E3-D#4. THIS ROLE IS CAST.

MRS. MEDLOCK/ENSEMBLE 40+, female, any ethnicity. The estate housekeeper, she tends towards cold and rigid. She believes things should be done in a certain way; resistant to change. Yorkshire dialect.

MARTHA 18-28, female, any ethnicity. A housemaid on the estate. Able to find joy in a world that hasn’t provided her with much; she has a buoyant and also practical view about life. Warm and welcoming. Yorkshire dialect. Strong vocalist with belt - vocal range: G3-D5. THIS ROLE IS CAST.

AYAH/ENSEMBLE
20-50, female, South Asian. Mary’s nanny while they are in India, she also appears in a ghostly form. Her lullabies haunt and soothe Mary as she travels back to England and discovers her life there.

FAKIR/ENSEMBLE 25+, male, South Asian, he was a spiritual presence in Mary’s life in India. Appears in a ghostly form. Vocal range: C3-D4.

DICKON 18-25, male, any ethnicity. Martha’s younger brother; gentle, sweet and deeply connected to the land in a slightly mystical way. He teaches Mary how to nurture plants and other living things. Yorkshire dialect. Youthful tenor with great strength - vocal range: D3-G4

ROSE/ENSEMBLE 28-35, female, any ethnicity. Mary’s mother. We see Rose in life, as well as in a ghostly form. While alive, she protested her sister Lily’s love of Archibald, ignored her own child, yet died rather than leave her husband Albert. Vocal range: A3-D6

ALBERT/ENSEMBLE 30-40, male, any ethnicity. Mary’s father. We see Albert in life, as well as in a ghostly form. He tries to protect his family when cholera ravages India, but does not fully understand the power of the disease. Warm and loving with Mary. Vocal range: D3-A5

MRS. WINTHROP/ENSEMBLE 30+. The headmistress of a girl’s school. She believes in strong discipline, but Mary’s spirit proves too much for her. Scottish dialect.

MARY LENNOX 10-13, female, any ethnicity. A child brought to England from her home in India after her parents both die of cholera. When we meet her she is spoiled and angry, but during the course of the show she grows warm and spirited. RP. Vocal range: Ab3-D5. THIS ROLE IS CAST.

COLIN CRAVEN 10 or 11, male, any ethnicity. Archibald’s son. Lonely and isolated, he craves friendship and fun, but has never been shown how to achieve these. He presents as demanding and needy, though wants simply to be loved and included. He has been told he is much sicker than he actually is. RP. Vocal range: A3-E4. THIS ROLE IS CAST.

ANTHONY REILLY 40-50, male, any ethnicity. A dreamer; quirky, sensitive, unique, an individual who doesn’t feel like he fits in to his surroundings. And yet—he wants to. Taking over his family farm is important to him, even if he’s not always sure why. THIS ROLE IS CAST.

TONY REILLY 60-75, male, any ethnicity. Anthony’s father; resourceful, cantankerous, proud, realistic. He does not quite know what to do with his son, who moves through life in a way that is quite different than he does. The opposite of sentimental.

AOIFE 60-75, female, any ethnicity. Rosemary’s mother. Her husband has just died, and she is dealing with grief in her own particular way. Resilient, forthright, connected to the land, and straightforward. THIS ROLE IS CAST.

ROSEMARY 35-45, female, any ethnicity. Also something of a misfit in these surroundings. Strong and soulful, with a hopeful sprit. She can imagine a different future, even if she isn’t quite sure how to get there. She has a sharp long-term memory, which matters to her. THIS ROLE IS CAST.

Plays the character of Jacqueline Marie Butler, plus numerous other characters including her mother, father, classmates, friends, neighbors, and teachers. Earnest, open, bright, perceptive, and observant. Interested in the world and all that it has to offer. Able to transform vividly and seamlessly as a storyteller.
