BREAKDOWN

Note on the production: GODSPELL, as reimagined by 2 Ring Circus and Donna Drake, is set inside the world of a newly bankrupted family circus at the height of the Civil Rights movement on the outskirts of Birmingham, Alabama in 1968. A hunted prophet and peacemaker is taken in by a traveling family of entertainers lost in a world of political and religious unrest. Over the course of their brief time with this miraculous man, they are each transformed by his teachings and find salvation even in the wake of his loss to journey out into the world and build a more Beautiful City.

The traditional script and score of the hit Broadway musical GODSPELL remains completely intact but is now told through the eyes and talents of this band of aerialists, acrobats, singers, dancers, jugglers and clowns as they find a new hope and inspiration for a better world where the greatest commandment is to love your neighbor as yourself.

JESUS

African American. A hero in every sense of the word. Free, charismatic, genuine in every sense, and could be comfortable and in control in any environment with little effort. A breath of inspiration everywhere he goes. When he speaks, people listen. He can’t help it: it is just the way he is. People are drawn to him for his truth and he delivers it because he is compelled to. He has the power to unite opposite sides and inspire change. This is his destiny and he is willing to go the distance. Sings SAVE THE PEOPLE, ALL FOR THE BEST, TURN BACK, O MAN, ALAS FOR YOU, BEAUTIFUL CITY & FINALE. Looking for a male actor to portray an Everyman with the spirit of MLK who will lead the diverse cast of acrobats, aerialists, jugglers and clowns through his teachings utilizing their circus acts and skills. Great singer and mover. Any special skills are welcome including juggling, magic, instrument playing, etc. Looking for an actor who would be willing to learn a few specific ground circus skills for the production. Education of those skills will be provided.

BARKER

African American. The front of house operator and stage manager who ensures that people are in the seats. He has been with the circus through the ups and downs and has always stuck by. Now he is fearful of where to go now that they are closing. He is sad and mournful of the loss of this grueling yet uplifting job. A man who has carried the bulk of the weight of keeping the doors open and making sure that everything is set in place when JOHN JUDAS is not. He wears many hats, but never asks for any special treatment or thanks. Sings ALL GOOD GIFTS & ON THE WILLOWS. Understudies JESUS. Looking for a male actor who sings amazingly and dances well with skills in partnering. Any special skills are welcome including juggling, magic, instrument playing, etc.. Looking for an actor who would be willing to learn a few specific ground circus skills for the production. Education of those skills will be provided
