Actors should prepare a brief contemporary dramatic monologue.

Bring picture and resume, stapled together.

SEEKING:

THE SHAWL

John
50s, any ethnicity. Smalltime mystic. He has a keen understanding of human behavior and desire. Tells people what they want before they want it and what they will do before they do it. He preys on peoples’ vulnerability to gain their trust and helps fulfill their desires in pursuit of reward.

Miss A
late 30s, any ethnicity. She is an unmarried woman with an income of a certain magnitude. She has recently lost her mother and is considering contesting the will. She consults the mystic for guidance. CAST.

Charles
30s, any ethnicity. John’s apprentice. He’s learning the ropes by listening in on John’s sessions. He is desperate for money and sees John’s work as a craft that would sustain him. He quickly catches on to the con and embraces it.

PRAIRIE DU CHIEN

A Porter
40-70, African-American. Sings at certain points during the play.

A Card Dealer
35-50. Caucasian. He deals cards on the train throughout the story.

A Gin Player
40s. Caucasian. He plays cards with Dealer. Challenges the way he deals.

A Storyteller
35-70. Caucasian. A Salesman. He’s an insomniac and talks with strangers easily. Relates a bewildering story to the Listener.

A Listener
30s. Caucasian. He is the receiver of the Storyteller’s tale.

The Listener’s Son
8-12, to play 8. Caucasian. Sleeps throughout most of the story.
