SEEKING

Equity actors for roles in GEM OF THE OCEAN, the first play in the timeline of August Wilson's American Century Cycle (see breakdown).

Local actors encouraged to attend.

PREPARATION

Please prepare a 1-2 minute dramatic or contemporary monologue. No Shakespeare please. Please also prepare to sing a few bars of your favorite work song or blues song (no accompaniment).

Eli - (Black, male identified) Aunt Ester's gatekeeper and longtime friend of Solly.

Citizen Barlow - (Black, male identified 20s-30s) A young man from Alabama who is in spiritual turmoil.

Aunt Ester Tyler - (Black, female identified, 285 years old) A very old yet vital spiritual advisor for the community.

Black Mary - (Black, female identified late 20s) Aunt Ester's protégé and housekeeper. Rutherford Selig - A travelling peddler who is a frequent visitor to the house.

Solly Two Kings - (Black, male identified, 67) Suitor to Aunt Ester- former Underground Railroad conductor.

Caesar Wilks - (Black, male identified, 52) Black Mary's brother and local constable.
