KATHERINE Female, Early/Mid 30's. Caucasian. The female lead. An American living in Siam with her much older Thai husband. Aristocratic yet lively, fun, open-minded and high-spirited. Loves to dance and a lover of art. She tries to bury a past full of hardship with a life of grand parties and a radiant, positive personality. She appreciates beauty and all that life has given her - taking notice of the special moments in life and embracing them completely. (Would love to see others around her do the same thing.) Genuinely trying to assimilate to a foreign Thai culture. Soprano.

CHAO-KUN ATIKARN Male, Mid 60s, Thai. A diplomat in the foreign service. A widower who has just married an American woman 30 years younger than he is. In his professional life, he is a man of powerful eminence. In his personal life, he is scared, shy, and confused, because he knows he cannot make his young wife happy. Good hearted, yet can be aggressive. Bass or low baritone, must be able to sing an E above middle C in full voice.

NUAN Female, 30’s-50’s, Thai. Chao-Kun’s devoted and long time family servant. Holds firmly to the traditions of Thai culture and status. Her devotion to Chao-Kun is tested by his new younger American wife. Through the course of the play, they find mutual respect and affection. Mezzo soprano or Alto.
KUMIKO Female, 20s, Japanese. A pretty, modern university student who has lived in New York. Lively, energetic, and can be considered outrageous compared to other traditional Japanese women. High belter with 30's swing sound.
SANTI Male, 20s, Thai. Fun, lively, studying to be a banker. A side-kick. High bari-tenor or tenor.

SURIN Male, early 20s, Thai. Chubby, funny, loves to eat, studying to be an entrepreneur. A side-kick. Baritone or bari-tenor.
JAPANESE FOREIGN MINISTER Male, 60s, Japanese. Rigid, yet very well mannered in a diplomatic way. Does not like America because he is afraid that America will be taking over Asia. Baritone, must be able to float an F# above middle C.

PREE Female, 20s, Thai. Pretty, a cross between a traditional and modern Thai woman. A good housewife. Should not be taller than 5'6. Soprano.

MALE ENSEMBLE All ages, must appear Japanese or Thai. Should have excellent singing and acting skills and have the ability and experience to cover principal roles. Classical ballet training and partnering experience a must.

FEMALE ENSEMBLE All ages, must appear Japanese or Thai. Should have excellent singing and acting skills and have the ability and experience to cover principal roles. Classical ballet training and partnering experience a must.
