When a storm leaves their tiny vessel helplessly adrift at sea, six Cuban refugees find themselves in a desperate battle against the elements, each other and their past. Set during the 1980 Mariel Boatlift when Fidel Castro allowed Cuban-Americans to bring family members by boat to America, but only if they took “undesirables” with them, this new play from a Cuban-born playwright sheds light on a rarely-told, but fascinating story in American history.

THE LUNATIC: Male, 40, Cuban of African descent. The former employee of a Havana advertising agency who, despite being loyal to Castro and the Revolution, was charged with treason and imprisoned as a young man for helping a friend escape to America. He has been released from the prison mental ward, his passage on Rolando's boat arranged by the government as a way of purging the island of unwanted citizens. Torture, prison, and guilt have altered his perception of reality; his mind jumps between past and present without warning. Still, he remains a talented artist with a wry sense of humor veiled beneath his pro-Castro ranting.

ROLANDO CONESSA: Male, 45, Cuban-American of Spanish descent, surprisingly forced to carry a mental patient and convicted criminal on board his boat along with his family members. He escaped Cuba 20 years ago and now owns a Cadillac dealership in Miami; highly opinionated and anti-Castro; he is a stern but caring father. Despite being a self-made man who has seemingly achieved a good life for himself and his family, he is racked with guilt for leaving his mother and loved ones behind.

ROLI: Male, 17, Cuban-American of Spanish descent, born in Miami. Rolando’s son. Optimistic, eager, kind, brave, full of practical knowledge but still naive. Like most of his generation, his only knowledge of Cuba, Castro and life on the island comes from the stories he's been told by his parents and older family members.

JOAQUIN ESPINOSA: Male, early 40’s, Cuban. Rolando’s brother-in-law. An ex-professor of mathematics and widowed single father who was once, but no longer, loyal to Castro and the Revolution. Resourceful and practical, but hesitant to take action. He has experienced great hardship and harbors his own guilt for rationalizing actions that put his sister, Rolando and others in jeopardy many years ago.

SAADIA: Female, 18, Cuban. Of Spanish and African descent. Joaquin’s daughter. Physically attractive, confident, and quick-witted; she was content with her circumstances in Cuba where she was poised to attend the top university, sang in a band and left her boyfriend behind. She believes in the principles of the communist system, the only way of life she has ever known. She makes this journey against her will at her father's insistence.
