Breakdown

EMPIRE BURLESQUE, a satirical Vaudeville romp, hosted by Mark Twain, chronicles America’s bumbling first foray into empire – the Spanish-American War. Media mogul William Randolph Hearst is the sole backer, so his Showgirl paramour can make her stage debut. The medium is the message, as Twain and Hearst struggle for control of the show, and their version of history. And of course, there’s the red-hot vocal stylings of Emma Goldman, William McKinley’s patriotic sleight-of-hand, Teddy Roosevelt’s tap-dance up San Juan Hill, and a bevy of all-American showgirls.

SEEKING:

NOTE: All actors sing. All should have strong comedic timing.
This is an ten-actor cast -- 7 men, 3 women. Except for Mark Twain and William Randolph Hearst, all actors play multiple roles.

QUEEN MARIA OF SPAIN – CAST.

[MARK TWAIN] Male, Caucasian, 60 and up. Older, but spirited. He has the gravitas of the classic Twain, but he’s mischievous. Vocal range: Mid-range.

[WILLIAM RANDOLPH HEARST] Male, Caucasian, 30 – 45. Full of himself. Confident, arrogant, charismatic. Imposing – it would be great (but not necessary) if he were on the taller side. Vocal range: Baritone/Tenor. Character voice OK.

[TEDDY ROOSEVELT] Male, Caucasian, 30 – 40. Great character part. Spark-plug of a guy, excitable. Bombastic. Will also play multiple roles, some with Spanish accent. Vocal range: Baritone.

[WILLIAM MCKINLEY] Male, Caucasian or mix, 30 - 45. Character actor. A back-slapping jokester. Incredibly confident. Seems oblivious, but really isn’t. Will play other roles as well. Vocal range: Baritone/Tenor.

[GERTRUDE THE SHOWGIRL] Female, Caucasian, 25-35. Pretty, brassy, ambitious chorus girl. Has William Randolph Hearst wrapped around her finger. She fancies herself a great actress, but she’s not. She also plays a sexy Emma Goldman. Vocal range: Alto.

[LITTLE GIRL] Female, Caucasian, 18 – 30, petite, looks young, to play 14 – 16 year old child laborer. Dead-pan, straight forward, slight Southern accent. Not intimidated. Will also play a Showgirl. Vocal range: Light Soprano.

[NEWSPAPER KID] Male, Caucasian, 18 – 30, on the short side, to play 17 year old. There’s a sweet innocence to him, even though he’s had to survive on his own. Also plays other characters. Vocal range: Tenor

[SIMMONS] Male, 35 – 45, African-American. Character actor. Dead-pan, dripping with irony about the racism he sees around him. Also needs comic ability for other roles. Vocal range: Bass (or low Baritone).

[FARMER] Male, Caucasian or mix, 30 - 45. Character actor. A versatile utility comedian, able to do many different characters, some with Spanish or German accents. Vocal range: Baritone/Tenor.
