SEEKING

Equity actors for roles in DREAMGIRLS (See breakdown).

PREPARATION

Please prepare a short selection of 60s music in a style consistent with the character(s) you are interested in that shows your range. An aux cord and an accompanist will be provided. All performers returning for callbacks will need to sing and dance; Principals will also need to dance. Please bring your headshot and resume stapled together.

Equity encourages members to prepare for their audition prior to arriving at the audition venue, to the extent that they can (e.g., get dressed, hair/make-up, etc.) to avoid crowding in bathrooms and dressing rooms.

DREAMGIRLS, the winner of 6 Tony awards, a sweeping and inspirational story that follows the history and evolution of American R&B music during the 1960s and 1970s through the eyes of a Detroit, Michigan girl group known as the Dreams.

SEEKING:


Principal Roles: All principal characters are Black/African American. If you identify as non-binary or genderfluid, you may choose which role fits you best, or submit for multiple roles as appropriate.

EFFIE WHITE – Black/African American, female-identifying, 18-late 20s. Lead singer of ‘The Dreamettes’. Later she gets fired from the group when Deena gets given the lead. Headstrong, sassy, temperamental, a diva. Powerful gospel singer with brilliant belt.

DEENA JONES – Black/African American, female-identifying, 18-late 20s. Becomes the lead singer of “The Dreams.” Marries Curtis but leaves him when she finds out about his illegal activities. Wants to become an actress. Beautiful. More of a commercial pop vocal.

LORRELL ROBINSON – Black/African American, female-identifying, 18-late 20s. The softer of the three “Dreams” Tries to keep the peace. Starts a relationship with Jimmy.

MICHELLE MORRIS – Black/African American, female-identifying, 18-late 20s. Replacement for Effie. A Dynamic singer/performer that better fits into Curtis' aesthetic for The Dreams. Headstrong and sure of her place. Falls in love with C.C. and facilitates the reunion of him and his sister, Effie.

CURTIS TAYLOR JR – Black/African American, male-identifying, early 30s. A used car salesman who talks himself into becoming ‘The Dreamettes’ Manager. Later becomes Jimmy’s Manager too. Resorts to payola, bribing DJ’s to play his clients music. Dates Effie but eventually marries Deena. Con man, forceful, a cheat, determined.

JIMMY ‘THUNDER’ EARLY – Black/African American, male-identifying, late 30s. A popular R&B star who, over time, loses his fame. Married but has an affair with Lorrell. An outrageous ‘star’ performer. High energy, chaotic.

C.C WHITE – Black/African American, male-identifying, 18-late 20s. Effie’sbrother. A songwriter.

MARTY – Black/African American, male-identifying, Late 40s-50s. Jimmy’s Manager. Quits as Jimmy’s Manager when Curtis starts to take over. Later becomes Effie’s Manager and teaches her to rebuild her confidence.

ENSEMBLE – Singers and singing dancers of various ages, gender identities, and ethnicities.
