New down-home musical. Sean Sullivan had a troubled youth & was sent to prison at 17 for 15 long years. He’s now out on parole, & returns to town to reunite with the friends & girl he left behind. However, now that he’s back, he finds they have moved on without him--his girl, Carol Anne, has a young daughter (Charlene) & is set to marry one of his old friends (Danny) the next morning. Carol Anne wants nothing to do with Sean, having had no contact with him for 15 years, but their friends, Maggie, Bobby, Daryl & Carl, invite Sean to stay for the engagement party. Sean & Danny have it out after Sean, in front of everyone, grabs Carol Anne & kisses her. Joe, Carol Anne’s brother, tells her there is something she may not know about the night Sean was sent to prison. Can Sean make Carol Anne fall back in love with him, or will she marry Danny? What is the secret about Sean going to prison that’s been hidden for so many years?

Audition material suggestion: Country/Bluegrass/Rockabilly up-tempo or ballad. Please bring your musical instrument to the audition.

Charlene, aka Charlie:

Seeking actress 18+ who must pass for 16. Charlene is Carol Anne’s 16-year-old daughter. Smart; doesn’t miss much. Tries to seem more adult than her years. Piano/guitar; other instruments a plus.

Maggie:

30s. Carol Anne’s best friend. Tells it like it is. Ability to play an instrument a plus.

Bobby:

30s. The cut-up of the group. A bit simple. Must play bass & guitar; other instruments a plus.

Daryl:

18-25. Happy-go-lucky country boy; somewhat oblivious to his surroundings & any drama around him. Must play guitar/bass/banjo; other instruments a plus.

Sean Sullivan:

CAST. 30s. Leading man-type. A bit rugged, but likable. Sent to prison at 17 for 15 years, he’s back to try & reclaim the life that was taken from him. Must play guitar; other instruments a plus.

Carol Anne:

CAST. 30s. Leading lady-type. Has a 16-year-old girl whom she’s raised on her own. Tough exterior, but soft on the inside. Plays piano; other instruments a plus.

THE HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES by Steven Canny & John Nicholson. Based on Arthur Conan Doyle's story. Dir: Mark Shanahan. Contract Dates: 7/2-7/29.

Audition material suggestion: Comic monologue.

Comic retelling of the classic Sherlock Holmes tale as performed by a traveling troupe of actors, determined to portray all of the characters in the sprawling epic. While they deliver a remarkably complete rendition of the story, they battle through the complications that come with any acting company, particularly one this small, competitive, joyous & determined. The play is a love letter to the theatre & to the tradition of theatrical companies.

Casting note: The production demands three actors with impeccable comic timing & who are physically agile & inventive. The actors play both genders, many ages & must switch costumes & accents with lightning-quick precision. No matter what character they are playing, of course, at heart they are informed by the relationship between the actors playing them. Actors with clown & dance training are preferred. Actors with experience at sleight-of-hand or magic are also of extreme interest. All ethnicities, sizes & types welcome!

Javier / Holmes:

30-50. Esteemed actor. Miscast as Holmes, but determined to be the iconic detective. His fiery temper bleeds through to the other characters he plays. Hot-headed & ridiculously passionate about this evening's performance. His ego is easily bruised & intrudes upon his professionalism at times.

Jason / Sir Henry:

25-40, British. Master of disguises; perhaps the most consummate actor of this small troupe. Fearless & agile. Nothing can stand in the way of his getting through this play. Has a light, cheery, wonderfully inventive energy born of 1000s of unappreciated performances.

John / Watson:

40s, British. Slightly vain. A bit battered by his career in the theatre. Not quite as bright as his colleagues. The lines between acting & surviving the play are not always clear to him. Believes he is the lead.

The Marvelous Wonderettes by Roger Bean. Dir/Choreo: Stephen Nachamie. Mus Dir TBA. Contract dates: 7/23-8/19. May extend.

Audition material suggestion: ‘50s or ‘60s up-tempo or ballad (singing from the score is fine but not required).

Musical revue takes you to the 1958 Springfield High School prom, where we meet the “Wonderettes”, four girls with hopes & dreams as big as their crinoline skirts! As we learn about their lives & loves, we are treated to the girls performing such classic ‘50s & ‘60s songs as “Lollipop”, “Dream Lover”, “Stupid Cupid”, “Lipstick on Your Collar”, “Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me”, “It’s My Party” & over 20 others!

Betty Jean Reynolds:

Self-anointed clown of the group, always vying for attention from best friend Cindy Lou. Her hair is red/auburn. Alto w/strong low range.

Cindy Lou Huffington:

The "bad girl" of the group. It seems that things always go her way, making Betty Jean crazy. Mezzo w/belt–sings lead on many songs.

Missy (Miller) Lee:

Always the over-achiever of the group; covers for mistakes & is always ready to jump in & save the day. Has an inner sexiness–even slightly kinky–that comes out every once in a while, much to her surprise & embarrassment. Has been best friends w/Suzy since elementary school. Soprano w/wide range & very high vocals.

Suzy (Simpson) Stevens:

Happy-go-lucky, a little giddy & a little silly. Always willing to go along with anyone & anything. Seems to giggle at just about anything. Finds great pleasure in everything she does; the sillier it is, the more fun she finds it. Her best friend is Missy. Mezzo/alto w/sweet, soulful sound & big belts.

Real Women Have Curves by Josefina Lopez. Dir TBA. Contract dates: 8/13-9/9.

Audition material suggestion: Contemporary comic monologue.

Set in a tiny sewing factory in East L. A., this is the outrageously funny story of five full-figured Mexican American women who are racing to meet nearly impossible production deadlines in order to keep their tiny factory from going under. And while they work, hiding from the INS, they talk... about their husbands & lovers, their children, their dreams for the future. The story is told from the point of view of Ana, the youngest among them. This play, a microcosm of the Latina immigrant experience, celebrates real women's bodies, the power of women, & the incredible bond that happens when women work together.

Ana:

18. Feminist. Recent high school graduate. Politically active & concerned. Waiting on her financial aid to come through so she can attend college. Ana dreams of getting out of the barrio & going off to college & becoming a famous writer. Although she needs the money, Ana doesn't like working at the factory & has little respect for the co-workers, who make fun of her ambitions & what they consider her idealistic feminist philosophies. However, Ana keeps working & chronicling her experiences in a journal. As the summer unfolds, she slowly gains an understanding & appreciation of the work & the women, eventually writing an essay that wins her a journalism fellowship which will take her to NYC.

Estela:

24. Owner of the Garcia Sewing Factory. Behind on her payments. Kind. Hardworking. Described in the play as "plain-looking" & "plump". Afraid to apply for amnesty because she owes money on some sewing machines, & thus spends most of the play being nervous, afraid & driven to complete her large order. Has a huge crush on a man the group jokingly calls "El Tormento". He takes her for a date & behaves inappropriately, making sexual advances that a smarter woman would have seen coming. That pretty much kills her crush.

Carmen:

48. Oldest of the women, Ana & Estela’s mom. Described as "short" & "large". Old-school mother with traditional values. Has a talent for storytelling & a tendency to use a harsh, blunt tone. Speaks her mind on all issues.

Pancha:

32. Smart, sassy. Described as a "huge woman". Very comfortable with herself, despite the fact that she can't have children, something her social conditioning has raised her to expect from life. She, like Carmen, is rather conventional, believing that Ana's education will be a turn-off for her future husband.

Rosali:

29. Often acts as mediator of fights within the group. A little thinner than the others, probably because she's constantly dieting. Described as "sweet & easygoing" by the playwright.

Production-specific Equity Principal Auditions / NYC: 3/5, 3/7, 3/8 & 3/9/12. See separate notices.
