Breakdown

The theatre is committed to casting a diverse company. Seeking actors of all cultures, ages, disabled and non-disabled. All actors must have a STRONG command of classical text.

Please note: This is a highly chambered production performed by an extremely versatile and energetic company of nine actors. Seeking actors who along with a STRONG command of classical text have the ability to delineate different characters through physicality, voice, etc. Except where noted as a part of the role requirements, ability to sing confidently a major plus for all roles.

SEEKING:

IACHIMO:
30’s. Italian gentleman. Friend and acquaintance to Philario and Posthumus. A dangerous combination of highly intelligent and highly amoral. Resourceful and creative, he spins his evil web with the flair and entertainment of an artist. This role will double. [CAST]

CYMBELINE:
50’s +. King of Britain. Father of Imogen. He has all the outward trappings of royalty but no real strength or power. He is both inept and sympathetic, likeable despite his weakness. This role likely doubles with JAILER and ROMAN CAPTAIN.

QUEEN:
50’s. Cymbeline’s Second wife. A mix of a little bit of Titania and A LOT of Lady Macbeth. She has turned greed and self-interest into an art form. This role doubles with BELARIUS: A banished Lord. Taking on a new identity, he now lives roughly as a peasant in the wilds of Britain. Wise. Intrinsic authority mixed with intelligence and integrity. This is a role for a leading actress who is shape-shifter enough to play both woman and man believably.

PISANIO:
30’s -40’s. Servant to Posthumus. He is the conscience of the play. Sly, watchful and ultimately capable of shaping the destiny of those he supposedly serves. This role likely doubles with MESSENGER, BRITISH LORD and JAILER.

GUIDERIUS AND AVIRAGUS:
20’s-30’s. Kidnapped from the court by Belarius, they are in reality Cymbeline’s sons raised in the wild. They have led protected lives, isolated from the harshness of the world. They possess a purity of spirit, their souls untouched by immorality or evil. Physically strong, with a wild, almost feral quality. Two young lions at play in an unspoiled paradise. These roles likely double with: PHILARIO: Italian friend to Posthumus. A good friend but not particularly strong in judgment or will. FIRST and SECOND GENTLEMEN and FIRST and SECOND LORDS among others. These are roles for LEADING ACTORS with enormous character actor skills who are shape shifter enough to play a multitude of roles with quick changes. We are seeking strong, confident SINGERS and BRILLIANT comedic actors.

CAIUS LUCIUS:
40’s-50’s. A Roman General. Intelligent, civil and respectful. An aristocrat who performs his duties with the greatest of care and nobility. A law-abiding company man. This role likely doubles with CORNELIUS: A physician and alchemist in Cybeline’s court who instructs the Queen in the magical use of herbs and plants and BRITISH CAPTAIN.
