Breakdown

NOTE: All roles require profound humor, wit, and complexity. With the exception of Joshua, all characters are British.

SEEKING:

CLIVE/CATHY
Male. To play Caucasian, age 30-50. CLIVE is a Victorian era colonial administrator in Africa – male, patriarchal, heterosexual, an empire builder though perhaps rather out of his depth? Also plays CATHY: a 4/5 year old girl in 1979 London. Working class.

BETTY/EDWARD
Male. To play Caucasian, age 28-35. BETTY must be played as a Victorian woman without any drag exaggeration. Also plays EDWARD: a middle class Londoner in 1979, uptight and initially troubled by who he is sexually.

JOSHUA/GERRY
Male. To play Caucasian, age 30-40. Both roles require a streak of profound dark humor and edge. JOSHUA is Clive's Black African colonial manservant, played by a white man because he’s alienated from his own culture. Also plays GERRY: a gay man in 1979 London. Working class compared to Edward.

EDWARD/BETTY
Female. To play Caucasian, age 30-50. EDWARD is Clive and Betty’s 9 year old son. An innocent who becomes increasing devious and uptight as the act goes on. Also plays BETTY: the Act One character 25 years older in late 1970s London – struggling to understand the shifting mores of society and her children's sexuality.

MAUD/VICTORIA
Female. To play Caucasian, age 30ish. MAUD is Clive's mother-in-law. A strong woman in a dependent position. Also plays VICTORIA: Edward’s sister 25 year on in late 1970s London, late 20s, trapped in a marriage with an overbearing husband. Bookish but struggles to express herself initially.

ELLEN/MRS. SAUNDERS/LIN
Female. To play Caucasian, age 20-30. Plays a range from completely repressed to boldly fearless. ELLEN is a governess – perhaps a clergyman’s daughter, of limited social prospects. Also plays: MRS. SAUNDERS: a strong independent woman who has been running a farm alone in colonial Africa since her husband died. LIN: a lesbian working class single mother in London.

HARRY BAGLEY/MARTIN
Male. To play Caucasian, age 30-40. HARRY is a Victorian explorer - a dashing romantic figure who’s actually tortured by his closet homosexuality. Also plays MARTIN: Victoria’s husband, who knows intellectually that he has to give up male power and control in 1970s London - but finds it difficult to actually do so.
