Molly is eager to hear Lena’s stories about coming to America, her life in New York back in the 20s and 30s and the Bistro. The musical then unfolds as a flashback starting on the boat coming into NY Harbor and moving through life on the lower east side of Manhattan. Lena helps her father on his clothing cart by singing to lure customers. She is very talented and beautiful and attracts the attention of the local mob gangs. When her Papa dies, her Uncle Ruby steps up to look after the family. He runs a small restaurant in Brooklyn where Lena cooks and sings. The mob, having followed Lena to Brooklyn, is also interested in Ruby’s restaurant—the basement being a perfect fit for an illegal speak-easy. In spite of the families’ resistance, the gangsters move in, using the restaurant as a foil and forcing young Lena to perform on stage in the speakeasy. Uncle Ruby is terribly upset by all of this: the sleazy club, the abuse of Lena, the imposition of the mob’s will. His supposed insider friend in the mob, Linsky, is unable to keep the boss, Tubman, from doing what he desires. Uncle Ruby creates an escape plan by purchasing a small restaurant in the Catskills, which he calls the Borscht Belt Bistro. His plan is to sneak the family away and live happily ever after. Meanwhile, Lena is falling in love with her beau, Benny.
