[WILL SHAKESPEARE] – Early-Late 20s. Male. Any ethnicity. A struggling actor-turned-playwright whose creative juices have dried up--until meeting the enchanting Viola de Lesseps. Always cash-strapped, he is currently trying to write “Romeo and Ethel, the Pirate’s Daughter.” Requires a young leading man of exceeding humor and charm and ego and sex appeal. Passionate and sensitive. Must be adept at handling…well, Shakespeare. Some movement skills required. Must have some experience with swordplay.

[VIOLA DE LESSEPS] – Early-Late 20s. Female. Any ethnicity. An elegant beauty from the upper class. In love with the theatre. As she puts it: “I want poetry in my life. And adventure. And Love. Love above all.” There is a rebel inside of her. Must be able to dress convincingly as a teenage boy actor. Requires a young leading lady of unvarnished purity of soul, wit, and charm. She is Juliet and Viola rolled into one. Shakespeare’s muse. Must be very adept at Shakespearean text. Some movement skills required.

[KIT MARLOWE] – Late 20s-mid-30’s. Male. Any ethnicity. Shakespeare’s friend and rival and the public’s current star playwright. A brilliant mind with an appealing sense of danger.

[PHILIP HENSLOWE] – Early 40s-Early 60s. Male. Any ethnicity. The builder and manager of the Rose Theatre, and as such, has a cash flow problem. [RICHARD BURBAGE] – Mid 40s-Mid 50s. Male. Any ethnicity. England’s greatest actor and one of the Lord Chamberlain’s men. Owner of the rival Curtain Theater. Full of ego. Some singing and movement required. Must have some experience with swordplay.

[FENNYMAN] – Mid 40s-60. Male. Any ethnicity. Theatrical money-lender who can be brutal in getting his money back. Like many producers, a shrewd combination of genial and (almost literally) cut-throat. His soft spot is a true, awestruck love for the theatre. Some singing required.
