Breakdown

An Octoroon is a contemporary reworking of Dion Boucicault‘s 19th century melodrama The Octoroon.

SEEKING:

BJJ / GEORGE/ M’CLOSKY: Male, 20s-30s, African American. Young contemporary playwright struggling to make sense of Boucicault’s original. He is inquisitive but confused, idealistic but ironic. Also able to step into the classical roles of George and M’Closky.

DORA: Female, late 30s to mid-40s. White. A fading Southern Belle. Primary character in Boucicault’s original.

ASSISTANT/ PETE/ PAUL: Male, 20-30s. Native American. Strong and loyal.

MINNIE: Female, 20s. African American. A domestic on the estate, a bit slow.

PLAYWRIGHT/ WAHNOTEE/ LAFOUCHE: Male., 30s-40s. Caucasian. Plays the role of Dion Boucicault, the Irish Playwright. Also plays Wahnotee and LaFouche.

DIDO: Female, 30s. African American. A domestic on the estate. Dry, ironic and wise.

GRACE: Female, 20s-30s. African American. A domestic on the estate. Funny and forgetful.

ZOE: Female, 20s- 30s. African American. The Octoroon of the title.

BR’ER RABBIT/ CAPTAIN RATTS: Male, any age, African American. Silent observer of the action of the play dressed as a rabbit. Also plays a salty sea captain.
