SEEKING

Equity actors for the 2019-20 Season. We will be casting all roles in all productions. AE is committed to diversity, inclusion, equal employment opportunity and universal access for all members. Ethical representation is core AE value.

PREPARATION

Prepare either a brief monologue, a brief song, or a combo of both.
Accompanist provided on June 8th only. Bring picture and resume.

JODI ISAAC – Female. Mid-40s. Jewish. Recently divorced when her husband met a younger woman. Razor-sharp wit, sometimes to a fault. Really needs her dad right now.

ELLIOT ISAAC – Male. 70. Jewish. Jodi’s father. Successful fashion designer. Dating someone the age of his grandson. Preoccupied with physical beauty in all its forms.

BENJAMIN CULLEN – Male 20. Jewish. Jodi’s son. Smart, maybe a little spoiled. Outwardly and proudly gay. Feels distance from his grandfather.

TREY – Male. 20. Any ethnicity. Elliot’s partner. Midwestern and earnest. Conventionally beautiful and in possession of an extremely fit body. Role requires shirtlessness and various stages of undress, though full nudity will not be required.

ORSOLYA – Female. 50s-60s. Hungarian. Elliot’s housekeeper. Tired and loyal. Has been working for Elliot a long time.

JEFF – Male. 40s. Any ethnicity. Elliot’s houseboy. Formerly involved with Elliot romantically and now is in his employ. Loyal and professional to a fault.

TEDDY – Male. Any ethnicity. Irene’s brother. Unstable and mercurial. We’re never sure if he’s telling the truth or living in a fantasy. Is he a friend or a threat? We’re not sure.

GERRY – Male. Any ethnicity. Irene’s husband. Domineering. Keeper of secrets. Rules Irene’s life like a tyrant.

ALISON – Female. 30-49. Any ethnicity. Narrator reflecting on her own life and her relationship with her father prior to his death. Must be strong singer. Range: Low E to light belt C sharp.

BRUCE – Male. 40-49. Any ethnicity. Alison’s dad. High school teacher who also runs funeral home and spends is spare time on historic preservation. Complex, repressed man with quick temper. Can be caring and attentive but also quick to anger. Must be strong singer. Range: B to G.

HELEN – Female. 30-49. Any Ethnicity. Alison’s mom. Exhausted by her marriage. Has spent a lot of time trying to keep the peace, ignoring her husband’s double life. Must be strong singer. Range: A flat to strong mixed E.

MEDIUM ALISON – Female. 16-20. Any ethnicity. Freshman at Oberlin. Discovering her sexual orientation. Very smart and well read. Socially awkward. Must be strong singer. Range: mix-belt to C and mix to E.

SMALL ALISON – Female. 8-10. Any ethnicity. Precocious and curious. Has burgeoning sense of identity and the things that make her different from other girls. Must be strong singer. Range: B to B.

JOAN – Female. 18-20. Any ethnicity. Student at Oberlin. Politically passionate; dry sense of humor. Alison’s first girlfriend. Must be comfortable singing alto lines in harmonies.

ROY/PETE/MARK/BOBBY/JEREMY – Male. 20-30. Any ethnicity. Various characters from the Bechdel’s world (yard worker, funeral home mourner, high school junior and the lead singer of a band in Alison’s imagination). Must have clean pop sound and comfortably hit a B.

CHRISTIAN – Male. 10-15. Any ethnicity. Alison’s brother; eldest of three siblings. Should be comfortable singing and have an outgoing personality.

JOHN – Male. 6-9. Any ethnicity. Alison’s kid brother; youngest of three siblings. Loads of energy. Should be comfortable singing and have an outgoing personality.

Simeon – Male. Late 30s. Any ethnicity. Much older than half-brother Eben. Earthy and stooped from years of farmwork. Smells of dirt.

Peter – Male. Late 30s. Any ethnicity. Much older than half-brother Eben. Like his brother Simeon, he is large and stooped from farmwork. Smells of dirt.

Ephraim – Male. 70s. Any ethnicity. Tall and gaunt. “Face as hard as if it were hewn out of a boulder.” Strong and something of a tyrant.

Abbie – Female. 20s-30s. Any ethnicity. Beautiful and sensuous . Strong willed and sometimes untamed. Role may require some nudity and sexual content.

Sherriff – Male. 30s-60s. Any ethnicity.

Townspeople – All genders, ethnicities and ages considered. Includes a fiddler, farmers, little girl and denizens of the surrounding community.
