Family Pictures USA to Host Grand Finale Celebration

By:

Could your family photos help tell Detroit's story?

For the past 5 weeks, the "Family Picture USA" team has been gathering photographs and stories from Detroiters about their lives, their families, their personal Detroit history. This precious material will be assembled into the pilot episode of A New Television series being filmed for Detroit Public Television and PBS's World Channel.

Now, "Family Pictures USA" will be hosting a Grand Finale celebration on Friday, July 21, from 4:30 - 6:30pm, in Gordon Park at the corner of 12th and Clairmount Street, on the spot where police raided a blind pig sparking the civil disturbance 50 years ago.

Join "Family Pictures USA", in association with Brothers Always Together, the Detroit Historical Museum, Detroit Public Television and WDET, as they kick off the weekend commemorating the anniversary of the historic Detroit 1967 rebellion.

Bring five of your favorite photographs - digital or printed photos - and share your stories of the Motor City, as seen through the lens of the family photo album.

Special guests that day will include individuals who have been interviewed and filmed for the TV show, including artists Tim Burke and Marsha Music, historian Jamon Jordan ... and, we hope, you!

"Family Pictures USA" is a documentary-style TV show that gives ordinary Americans an opportunity to discover their hidden family histories - stashed in boxes or on old floppy disks and new smartphones - and reconnect with their relatives and old friends. These people will have a new home in our nation's collective consciousness and, through these images, introduce us to a more nuanced, diverse story of our common history, shared present and evolving future.

The show is hosted by award-winning director Thomas Allen Harris, who is partnering with the Detroit Historical Museum's Detroit 67: Looking Back to Move Forward project to present a "people's history" of the Motor City.

We urge you to join the celebration and share your Detroit story with the community on Friday, July 21, from 4:30 - 6:30pm, in Gordon Park, which is at the corner of Clairmount and Rosa Parks Blvd. (12th St.).
