Dallas Theater Center to Bring OEDIPUS EL REY to Studio Theatre, 1/16-3/2

Dallas Theater Center returns to the Studio Theatre for the first time since 2012 with Latino playwright Luis Alfaro's sizzling, sexy and startlingly contemporary play Oedipus el Rey, which features an all-Latino cast. DTC Artistic Director Kevin Moriarty will direct the play, an adaptation of Sophocles' timeless Greek tragedy Oedipus Rex and set in the vicious reality of today's L.A. barrios.Oedipus el Rey opens in previews on Thursday, January 16, 2014 with a Pay-What-You-Can performance and runs through March 2, 2014.Tickets to Oedipus el Rey are on sale now at www.DallasTheaterCenter.org and by phone at (214) 880-0202.

With Oedipus el Rey, MacArthur Genius Foundation Fellow Alfaro gives audiences a super-modern revamp of an ancient Greek play that shines a light on the issue of recidivism. Oedipus is a Chicano delinquent from South Central Los Angeles, who fights his way to the pinnacle of gangland power. His journey, which includes a family of ex-cons all trapped in a vicious world of drugs and violence, ends with the revelation of secrets and personal violence that will inspire rich and complicated conversations about justice, fate and freewill.

Phillipe Bowgen, whose credits include New York Theatre Workshop, Hartford Stage and Trinity Repertory Company, stars as Oedipus. Sabina Zuniga Varela, National Hispanic Cultural Center regular and New Mexico Hispano Entertainer's Association's Female Performer of the Year, appears alongside him as Jocasta, the object of Oedipus' desire. Brierley Resident Acting Company member Daniel Duque-Estrada takes the stage in his second DTC appearance as Creon. Associate Artists at Cara Mia, one of the leading Latino theater companies in North Texas, with whom DTC is currently developing a project for future seasons, Ruben Carrazana and Rodney Garza will also appear in Oedipus. Local actor David Lugo, who has appeared on stage at The Undermain Theatre and The Shakespeare Festival of Dallas, and Southern Methodist University student Steve Torres round out the cast.

Audience members will find the Wyly's Studio Theatre transformed into an arena configuration, designed by Matthew McKinney, that will plunge them into and the midst of the intensely intimate experience with the actors in a small space. The costumes are designed by Jennifer Ables and the lighting is designed by Aaron Johansen.

Following the incredibly successful run of DTC's new production of A Christmas Carol, which preformed almost nightly to sold-out houses, theater-goers are encouraged to purchase their tickets early to ensure their ability to see this unique and explosive production. Any unsold tickets to the PWYC performance will be available for purchase at the Wyly Theatre box office the night of the show beginning at 6:00pm. DTC'sCome Early sponsored by Wells Fargo will take place one hour before every performance and will be led by Daniel Duque-Estrada. Patrons will have the opportunity to learn about the play prior to viewing the production. DTC's Dr. Pepper Snapple Stay Late will take place after each performance.
