Tennessee Williams' beautiful and grotesque drama about the murder of a young man in Europe one summer is the lyrical master's etude on the visceralness and violence of lust and passion. In order to come to grips with the tragedy, Catharine Holly, the sole witness and the victim's closest cousin, is given a truth serum in order for her to purge the trauma. The result is wickedly fascinating poetry pouring from the deepest places of heart and gut. Famed theater critic Walter Kerr wrote that “The very reluctance with which the grim, hopeless narrative is unfolded binds us to it; Mr. Williams threads it out with a spare, sure, sharply vivid control of language and the spell is cast.”
