Lead Scenic Carpenter - Skylight Music Theatre

FUNCTION

• Provide skilled workmanship for the scenic and stage elements needed for Skylight Music Theatre's productions and functions, and Broadway Theatre Center events. Supervise carpentry staff and over-hire as directed by the Technical Director. The Lead Carpenter’s work on the shop floor and on stage at the theatre will serve as a model, exemplifying expected standards of quality and safety.



RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Perform scenic construction duties as assigned by the Technical Director. Construct or adapt from stock all scenic elements for each production and ensure the safe and timely completion, installation, and strike of all scenic elements.

2. Inspect all scenery before going to paints and to ensure correct and consistent labeling of all scenic elements.

3. Maintain all shop floor drawings.

4. Supervise and ensure employee and over-hire compliance with safety procedures and policies, including, but not limited to the use of: eye protection, gloves, respirator/masks, ventilation, blade guards, ladders, fall protection, proper lifting practices and posted safety procedures.

5. Act as a liaison between shop floor staff and Technical Director.

6. Will call start, break and clean-up in the shop, at load-in and at load outs, and is responsible for the close and lock down of the scene shop and/or theatres at the end of each workday.

7. Assist in maintaining a safe, clean work place in all production areas, including the stage. Perform regular inspection of tools, machinery and facilities, notifying Technical Director of any problems discovered.

8. Perform regular check of inventory and supplies and report any supply shortages to the Technical Director in a timely manner.

9. Assist in maintenance all scenic elements of the production throughout the performance run.

10. Assist in maintaining the warehouse and other stock.

11. Construct, install, and provide support for special projects and events within the company.

12. Attend monthly staff meetings and meetings as requested.

13. Work as a collaborative team member, and maintain a positive attitude.

14. Other duties as assigned.



SKILLS AND TRAINING:

1. Must have BA in Theatre or comparable professional experience with training in technical theatre production including set construction.

2. Able to read and interpret construction drawings.

3. Understanding of basic scenery design.

4. Possess high organizational and personnel skills.

5. Working knowledge of a variety of construction methods, materials and techniques including wood, fabric, metal and plastics.

6. MIG Welding Experience strongly recommended.

7. Comprehensive training in the safe operation of stationary and portable power tools, hand tools, stage rigging and equipment.

8. Understanding of the safe and healthful use and disposal of chemicals and other potential hazardous materials.





PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Must be able to carry up to 50 pounds unaided and lift 50-70 pounds.

2. Must be able to climb and work from ladders and heights.

3. Must have the vision and dexterity to safely operate stationary and portable power tools, hand tools, stage rigging and equipment.

4. Must be able to stand and work on their feet for over 50% of any given workday.
