A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum: Vaudeville meets ancient Rome in this Stephen Sondheim musical farce about Pseudolus, a slave seeking to gain his freedom. To this end, Pseudolus offers to help his young master, Hero, woo and win the luscious Philia, a courtesan from the brothel next door. But Philia has been promised to someone else, whom she mistakes for Hero's father. And so begins this comedy of mistaken identities, characters in disguise, a madcap chase, satirical commentary on social class and, of course, plenty of puns. Inspired by the work of the ancient Roman playwright Plautus.
