PEOPLE reports exclusively that Bindi Irwin, daughter of the late ANIMAL expert Steve Irwin, is the first contestant announced for the upcoming 21st season of ABC's DANCING WITH THE STARS.

In a statement to the site, Irwin shared,"I am absolutely thrilled. I can't tell you how excited I am. I think that it is going to be a truly unbelievable new experience. I can't wait to see what is to come."

The 17-year-old recently returned from an annual family trip to the Steve Erwin Wildlife Preserve, where they spent "a month studying crocodiles to see where they go and what they get up to."

Commenting on the transition from jungle to dance floor, Irwin admits, "The contrast will be hugeI'm a little scared but we will see what happens."

Season 21 of Dancing with the Stars premieres Sept. 14 at 8 p.m. ET on ABC. As reported last week, long-time head judge Len Goodman will not appear on the new season of the show.
