WNYC's Soundcheck and Latino USA Hosts Latin Alternative Music Conference Acts Today

The Latin Alternative Music Conference has come to New York this month and WNYC's Soundcheck and Latino USA are continuing the celebration in The Greene Space at WNYC.

Today, July 11, critically-acclaimed Argentine singer-song writer Juana Molina along with psychedelic salsa band La Mecanica Popular and members of New York-based Labyrinth Theater Company come together for an evening of live music and even livelier conversation. The event will be emceed by Maria Hinojosa, the award-winning host and executive producer of the longest running Latino-focused program on public radio, Latino USA and John Schaefer host of Soundcheck, WNYC's destination for new music and live performance.

"Latino USA is thrilled to team up with WNYC's 'Soundcheck,' showcasing local and international talent,," says Hinojosa "The deep creativity, diversity and young talent of the Latin American community continue to define the arts, music and theater in the U.S."

Juana Molina continues to stand out as one of the most talented Argentinean singer-composers of her time, crossing many experimental, pop, electronic, acoustic and contemporary frontiers, yet remains rooted in Argentinean folk music.

Led by Peruvian singer and pianist Efraín Rozas, the NYC-based band La Mecánica Popular melds the heavy Afro-Caribbean grooves of salsa with the mind-warping textures of psychedelic rock.

Founded in 1992 by a small group of actors, the Labyrinth Theater Company was built upon the grounds of pushing artistic limits and telling new, more inclusive stories that expand boundaries and redefine the landscape of mainstream theater.

NPR's Latino USA with Maria Hinojosa is produced by the Futuro Media Group, with a core mission of providing weekly insights into the lived experience of Latino communities and to be a window to the cultural, political, and social ideas that impact the country's fastest-growing demographic.

John Schaefer has hosted Soundcheck, WNYC's on-air and online destination for new music, live performances and engaging conversation with artists, critics and more since the show's inception in 2002.
