New York Opera Alliance Announces the Third Annual New York Opera Fest Performance Schedule

New York Opera Alliance (NYOA), a consortium of New York opera companies and producers, presents the third annual New York Opera Fest (nyoperafest.com), a two-month celebration of opera on an unprecedented scale that takes place throughout May and June, with over 20 New York City-based companies large and small, putting on over 30 events in venues around the city, including World Premiere performances of 12 new works.

The Fest shows opera in its myriad forms, from world-class productions of traditional favorites, to the far-flung fringes of innovation and instigation that drive the art form forward. The staggering breadth of offerings on display presents a raw, un-sanitized snapshot of all that opera is, has been, and can be.

This year's Fest includes Experiments in Opera releasing a serial podcast opera, a #MeToo take on Mozart's Don Giovanni by HEARTBEAT Opera, the World Premiere of a jazz opera based on the life of 1920s avant-garde Parisian Kiki de Montparnasse by Cantanti Project, Hunter Opera Theatre and American Opera Projects performing three one-act Premieres, New Amsterdam Opera presenting Donizetti's rarely heard La Favorita in a performance dedicated to Dmitri Hvorostovsky, Operamission's binge-watchable behind-the-scenes look at Handel's Teseo, and many more productions in locations ranging from a pub to a public library, a playground to a playhouse.

New this season, NYOA is excited to announce FestTix: $0-12 tickets that allow the culturally curious to explore a sampling of Fest offerings at little to no risk. FestTix will be on sale April 1 - May 1 through the New York Opera Fest website (nyoperafest.com).

The New York Opera Alliance works in partnership with OPERA America, the national service organization for opera and the nation's leading advocate for American opera, based in the National Opera Center in New York City. The New York Opera Festival is supported in part by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council.

PERFORMANCES INCLUDE:

Experiments in Opera releases Jason Cady's Buick City, 1:00 AM, an audio-only murder-mystery, as a serial podcast exploration of opera with songs, spoken dialogue, sound design, and music. They also premiere And Here We Are, a shadow puppet opera staged using an updated take on traditional Javanese shadow puppetry.

Heartbeat Opera presents Don Giovanni as a complex resonator of our cultural climate that questions if the great seducer is destroying or empowering the women he encounters, and a Fidelio adaptation that pits corruption against courage and hate against hope when a black activist is wrongfully incarcerated.

Cantanti Project performs the World Premiere of Tabula Rasa, a jazz opera that tells the story of Kiki de Montparnasse and her liberating escapades with artists in the avant-garde circles of 1920s Paris.

SIGN & SING and American Opera Projects premiere five short feminist operas based on Judy Chicago's The Dinner Party at the Brooklyn Museum, each performed both in English and American Sign Language.

Center for Contemporary Opera presents three productions, including Pascal Dusapin's one-act opera, To Be Sung, adapted from a short story by Gertrude Stein, Scott Wheeler's The Sorrows of Frederick, based on the life of King Frederick the Great of Prussia, and Douglas Knehans' monodrama, Backwards from Winter, a reflection on love told using electronics and video streams.

New Amsterdam Opera presents Donizetti's rarely heard masterpiece, La Favorita, in a production dedicated to the memory of the late Russian baritone Dmitri Hvorostovsky.

Operamission continues their complete Handel opera cycle with Il Pastor Fido and Teseo - the latter being split up into their "Some Assembly Required" format, a binge-watchable breakdown of each act of the opera, before presenting a performance of the full work afterward.

Opera Upper West presents Mozart's The Impresario, an immersive exhibition of the corporeal costs of the aspiring opera singer, at a location revealed upon ticket purchase.

Bronx Opera presents a production of Weber's rarely-heard Der Freischütz, that looks at the classic Faustian plot from a modern viewpoint.

Opera on Tap presents a concert at Freddy's Bar and Backroom, contemporary arias paired with food and drink specials at Barbès, and Hansel and Gretel at the playground of Harlem's PS 129 with a chorus of third graders.

Regina Opera Company ends its 48th Season on an ambitious note, with a fully-staged production of Verdi's Aida.

NYC's opera scene is at its most open and inviting in decades, and nobody seems as anxious to tear down the imaginary walls keeping novices out of the halls as the New York Opera Festival.
