Jazz Duo Dan Tepfer and Aaron Diehl to Perform as Part of 'Uncharted' Series at Greenwich House Music School

This one-of-a-kind collaboration explores the unlikely common ground between two leading pianists from opposite ends of the jazz spectrum. Aaron Diehl is an aficionado of the early tradition of jazz piano, while Dan Tepfer is inspired by the avant garde.

This New York City premiere presentation was first performed for the Catskill Jazz Factory at the Fisher Center for the Performing Arts at Bard College, and celebrates the spirit of artistic collaboration in an unprecedented blend of J.S. Bach and the Great American Songbook from Cole Porter Fellows Tepfer and Diehl.

Dan Tepfer: Website / Facebook Born in Paris to American parents, pianist-composer Dan Tepfer has translated his bi-cultural identity into an exploration of music that ignores stylistic bounds. As the New York Times has written, he "combines superb technique with a complex set of impulses: he's a deeply rational improviser drawn to the unknown". He has worked with the leading lights in jazz, including extensively with saxophone luminary Lee Konitz, while releasing seven albums as a leader in solo, duo and trio formats. His solo work Goldberg Variations / Variations, which pairs his performance of Bach's work with improvised variations of his own, has received broad praise as a "riveting, inspired, fresh musical exploration" (New York Times). As a composer, he is a recipient of the Charles Ives Fellowship from the American Academy of Arts and Letters for works including Concerto for Piano and Winds, premiered in the Prague Castle with himself on piano, and Solo Blues for Violin and Piano, premiered at Carnegie Hall. Bringing together his undergraduate studies in astrophysics with his passion for music, he is currently working on integrating computer-driven algorithms into his improvisational approach. Awards include first prize and audience prize at the Montreux Jazz Festival Solo Piano Competition, first prize at the East Coast Jazz Festival Competition, and the Cole Porter Fellowship from the American Pianists Association.

Aaron Diehl: Website / Facebook Pianist Aaron Diehl is one of the most sought-after jazz virtuosos, playing with what The New York Times describes as "melodic precision, harmonic erudition, and elegant restraint." Diehl's meticulously thought-out performances, collaborations, and compositions are a leading force in today's generation of jazz contemporaries, spearheading a distinct union of traditional and fresh artistry. Diehl's album on Mack Avenue Records, Space, Time, Continuum, emphasizes the artistic collaborations between generations. It includes performances by NEA Jazz Master Benny Golson (tenor saxophone) and Duke Ellington Orchestra alumnus Joe Temperley (baritone saxophone), alongside Diehl's trio. The majority of the album consists of his original compositions, with the title track co-written by Grammy nominated jazz singer Ce?cile McLorin Salvant. Recently, Diehl has served as Music Director for the Jazz at Lincoln Center New Orleans Songbook concert series, performed in the premiere of Philip Glass' complete Etudes, collaborated with Spanish flamenco guitarist Dani De Moro?n in Flamenco Meets Jazz, and toured with Ce?cile McLorin Savant.

Now entering its third full year, Uncharted at Greenwich House Music School has emerged as one of New York's most exciting and unpredictable live music series, drawing attention from tastemakers and curators from across the city. Every Uncharted performance features New York City artists premiering new projects or meeting with new collaborators for the first time on stage. Past performers include a collaboration between Marc Ribot and Emeline Michel, Sony Masterworks recording artist Bria Skonberg, ShaRon Jones and The Dap-Kings guitarist Binky Griptite, acclaimed harpist Brandee Younger, vocalist Deva Mahal, jazz trumpeter Steven Bernstein, Broadway's Grace McLean (The Great Comet), avant-garde theater artists Erin Markey and Emily Bate and many more. The 2017 Uncharted season promises a continuation of eclectic excellence in a broad selection of genres representing the melting pot of New York City, including Mexican folkloric, ragtime, classical, modern and traditional jazz, ancient Moroccan devotional and contemporary R&B.

"The Uncharted series was founded as a safe space for artists to take risks," says series curator Jennie Wasserman, formerly of Jazz at Lincoln Center, Joe's Pub, Carnegie Hall, and SFJAZZ. "This year's programming, however, also embraces the voices of women, immigrants, minorities, and LGBTQ communities, in response to the divisiveness of the recent election. New York City is America's quintessential sanctuary city, and Greenwich House, located in the heart of the the historically diverse West Village, is an artistic and cultural sanctuary where artists are encouraged to take risks and exercise freedom of expression. The Uncharted series offers the opportunity for artists and audiences alike, to come together and experience the life-changing power of live performance to challenge preconceived notions, diminish our differences, and celebrate our humanity."

Performances for Uncharted take place every Thursday from March 23 to May 11 with performances beginning at 8:00 pm. Most performances are $15 for advance tickets. Complimentary drinks will be served prior to and during all concerts.
