Barbara Cook, Vinyl, 'Dancing in the Grand Ballrooms' and More Set for Symphony Space's SLEEPING AROUND Festival, Now thru 5/21

Everyone looks forward to Symphony Space's annual Spring Festival, highlighted by the Wall to Wall marathon, and this may be the most provocative one yet. Sleeping Around, Symphony Space's 2014 installment, celebrates the culture and notoriety of New York City's hotels and their denizens, from the Algonquin to the Chelsea. It opens today, April 26 with a concert by Barbara Cook, and runs through May 21, with a tasty menu of concerts, readings, and films. Wall to Wall Cabaret takes place on Saturday, May 3 (5 - 11 pm).

Here's the preliminary rundown:

• April 26 at 8 pm: An Evening with Barbara Cook
  "Barbara Cook is the greatest singer in the world" (Financial Times). Soak in the warm timbre of Cook's unmistakable voice in this intimate evening celebrating her runs at the Cafe Carlyle and Feinstein's at Loews Regency.
• April 27 at 6 pm: Andy Warhol: A Documentary Film
  Ric Burns unearths rarely seen footage and offers keen observations on the life and artistic influence of Andy Warhol.
• May 3 from 5 pm - 11 pm: Wall to Wall Cabaret FREE!
  This joyous romp through the world of cabaret celebrates the speakeasies and nightclubs of Prohibition, the elegant hotel cabarets and jazz clubs that introduced Sarah Vaughan and Eartha Kitt, and the cabaret renaissance taking place now. Hosted by James Naughton and featuring an impressive roster of surprise guests.
• May 4 at 10:30 pm & May 11 at 4:30 pm: Vinyl
  A 1965 black-and-white experimental sci-fi film, Vinyl is Warhol's adaptation of A Clockwork Orange, and one of his first films from The Factory featuring Edie Sedgwick.
• May 4 at midnight & May 11 at 6:15 pm: The Velvet Underground & Nico: A Symphony of Sound
  This 1966 film by Andy Warhol and Paul Morrissey depicts a rehearsal of The Velvet Underground and Nico in one long improvisation filmed at The Factory.
• May 8 at 7:30 pm: Virgil Thomson & Friends at the Chelsea Hotel
  The bohemian world of long-time Chelsea Hotel resident Virgil Thomson is illuminated in this evening lauding the life and work of this audacious and incomparable American composer. The program includes pieces by Thomson, Copland, Rorem, Bowles, and Busby. Curated by Jed Distler and sponsored by The Virgil Thomson Foundation.
• May 9 at 8 pm: Dancing in the Grand Ballrooms: Michael Arenella & His Dreamland Orchestra
  Michael Arenella and his Dreamland Orchestra sweep you away to an enchanted time of hotel grandeur, dashing fashion, and intoxicating music from the 20s to 50s.
• May 11 at 8 pm: Trash
  Written and directed by Paul Morrissey and presented by Andy Warhol, this 1970 film follows characters Joe and Holly as they try to make a go of things in their Lower East Side basement.
• May 18 at 7 pm: Chelsea Girls
  Lacking a formal narrative, Warhol's art house classic follows various residents of the Chelsea Hotel in 1966 New York City. Presented in split screen with a single audio track in conjunction with one side of the screen.
• May 21 at 7:30 pm: Selected Shorts: Dorothy Parker's Wicked Pen
  The shrewdly funny and legendary Algonquin Round Table writer was a master of the short story. We present some of her best with special drinks and special guests. Selected Shorts is hosted by BD Wong.
