Andrew Lloyd Webber Talks Subject Matter, STEPHEN WARD & More

Internationally celebrated composer Andrew Lloyd Webber discusses his historically-informed new West End musical STEPHEN WARD as well as his unusual choices in subject matter for his musicals as well as much more as part of a new interview.

Lloyd Webber opines of the subject matter of STEPHEN WARD itself, "Frankly it's not everybody's cup of tea."

Continuing, Lloyd Webber asserts, "I know that, but every now and then it's good to take on a subject that may appear to be a bit strange. And at the same time it's allowed me to do a lot of musical things that I might not otherwise have done."

Furthermore, the dynamics of the piece have artistically inspired Lloyd Webber, he says.

"Setting scenes like the trial to music has been very interesting. Somebody who was there said that the judge's summing up sounded fair if you read it in print; but it was the way he delivered it that wasn't [fair]. I thought, that's a very interesting thing, to see if one could do that in music," Lloyd Webber relates.

Additionally, Lloyd Webber confirms he has handled the orchestrations entirely himself for the varied score of STEPHEN WARD. "I've orchestrated this myself for the first time since the first draft of Cats," he says.
