Although Stone procured the rights for the story, along with producing partner Moritz Borman from Guardian journalist Luke Harding, THE SNOWDEN FILES is actually based on the novel, Time of the Octopus. The book, by Anatoly Kucherena, Snowden's Russian lawyer, mostly chronicles Snowden's stint seeking asylum from the United States in Russia.

Production on the film will begin in January.

Woodley is currently working on three more films in the DIVERGENT franchise and appeared in the blockbuster adaptation of John Green's novel THE FAULT IN OUR STARS earlier this year. Among her other screen credits are THE SPECTACULAR NOW, THE DESCENDANTS and THE SECRET LIFE OF THE AMERICAN TEENAGER TV series.
