ONE DIRECTION: THIS IS US Wins Weekend Box Office Ahead of Labor Day with $17 Million
ONE DIRECTION: THIS IS US banked on the band's cult to score the film a holiday weekend win.
Following Friday's haul of $8.9 million at Friday's box office, with estimates as high as $25 million for Labor Day weekend, the film grossed $17 million as of today. With an $8 million gap separating THIS IS US' actual weekend gross from tomorrow's potential holiday cumulative, it appears as if the ONE DIRECTION guys won't hit the studio's projection. BWW will bring the updates numbers tomorrow.
In the second spot was Lee Daniels' critical and commercial success THE BUTLER, which delivered an additional $14.7 million, bumping its total to just north of $74 million.
WE'RE THE MILLERS also held strong, shifting to the third spot this week with $12.6 million. Warner Bros. comedy with Jason Sudeikis and Jennifer Aniston has now earned $109.5 million since its initial release earlier in August.
In the fourth spot was Disney's PLANES, which failed to be box office blockbuster as initially suspected. With this weekend's earnings of $7.7 million, the film's domestic gross now rests at $70.8 million.
Rounding out the top five was Lionsgate's Spanish comedy INSTRUTIONS NOT INCLUDED, which debuted to $7.5 million.
