Variety reports that Maggie Gyllenhaal has signed on to join the cast of FRANK, a comedy film from Lenny Abrahamson. The actress joins previously announced cast members Domhnall Gleeson, Michael Fassbender, Scoot McNairy, musician Carla Azar, and actor and musician Francois Civil. Jon Ronson and Peter Straughan penned the script.

FRANK tells the story of "a young musician (Gleeson) who finds himself out of his depth when he joins a band of eccentric musicians headed by the enigmatic Frank (Fassbender) and his terrifying sidekick Clara (Gyllenhaal)."

The Irish-UK film is produced by Ed Guiney, David Barron and Stevie Lee for Element Pictures and Runaway Fridge. Filming is set to begin this month on location in New Mexico and Ireland.

Gyllenhaal starred in the romance film Secretary, for which she received critical acclaim and a Golden Globe nomination. Her other credits include the indie film Sherrybaby (2006), for which she was nominated for a Golden Globe, the romantic comedy Trust the Man (2006), and big-budget films such as World Trade Center (2006) and The Dark Knight (2008). She also starred in the 2009 musical-drama Crazy Heart, for which she was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress.

The actress has also appeared in theatrical plays, including Closer (2000), and teleVision Productions, including Strip Search (2004).
