LA CAGE AUX FOLLES Director Dies at 85
Oscar-nominated director Edouard Molinaro, who helmed LA CAGE AUX FOLLES, has died, according to the Associated Press. He was 85.
Molinaro's passing was confirmed by the office of French President Francois Hollande's, in a statement that called him "great, appealing and original," a director who "conquered the public and the admiration of his peers at the same time."
LA CAGE AUX FOLLES was adapted as a musical in 1983, and featured music and lyrics by Jerry Herman and book by Harvey Fierstein, based on the play by Jean Poiret. This freshly reconceived production is choreographed by Lynne Page and directed by Terry Johnson.
In the production, Georges is the suave owner of a glitzy drag club on the French Riviera. Partnered romantically with his high-strung star performer, Albin, the pair live a charmed life-until Georges' son announces his engagement to the daughter of a conservative right-wing politician who's coming to dinner.
