In an interview in yesterday's GQ, screenwriter, film and television producer, director, comic book author, composer, and actor Joss Whedon spoke about his recent film MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING as well as his future projects, including AVENGERS 2.

Whedon shared that while Shakespeare, science fiction novels and horror movies are among his great loves, it is probably musicals which top the list. "So apparently I'm just full of love!," he joked, "Which is weird, because I'm as mean as a snake."

The director also spoke about the origin of the idea to make a black and white adaptation of one of Shakespeare's greatest works. "... it took me a long time - years and years, and finally the nudging of my wife, to say "OK, what do I think the movie is about? Let's look at the text again." And for some reason, after eluding me for years it unfolded in a day. I went, "Oh, oh my god, I know exactly how I feel about this movie - and it's not a version I've seen." And I said OK, now it's time to take something... because the film is not a play. It's not at all. And as much as it is true to the text and is a love letter to it, it must have its own agenda."

Whedon also revealed his vision for the classic production. "I had a specific agenda: I felt that this was a darkly comic take on how we manipulate ourselves and each other into romance, and courtly love, and passion and how these things are all constructs, how they're imposed. Only when we get out of that game, leave the party behind, do we find something that can be mature and beautiful between two people," he explained.

Speaking on his next project, Marvel's Avengers 2, Whedon explained what input, if any, Marvel films Thor and Iron Man 3 have on his final version. "It's a dance, but I had to do it on the first one too. You want to honour the events of the last movie but you don't want to be beholden to them, because some people will see Avengers who did not see any of the movies inbetween or even Avengers 1."
